INFICON is a leading provider of innovative instrumentation, critical sensor technologies, and Smart Manufacturing/Industry 4.0 software solutions that enhance productivity and quality of tools, processes, and complete factories. These analysis, measurement and control products are essential for gas leak detection in air conditioning/refrigeration and automotive manufacturing. They are vital to equipment manufacturers and end-users in the complex fabrication of semiconductors and thin film coatings for optics, flat panel displays, solar cells and industrial vacuum coating applications. Other users of our vacuum-based processes include the life sciences, research, aerospace, packaging, heat treatment, laser cutting and many other industrial processes. We also leverage our expertise in vacuum technology to provide unique, toxic chemical analysis products for emergency response, security, and environmental health and safety.
Job Description
When manufacturing microscopic semiconductor devices, identifying process deviations early in the process is crucial to saving time and money. As these devices become smaller and more complex, it becomes more difficult to detect these mistakes. Residual Gas Analyzers (RGAs) are advanced sensors that are used to measure the chemical composition of gases during chip manufacturing and can be used to detect potential issues. INFICON is a leading provider of both RGAs and software to the semiconductor industry. We are looking for a data science summer intern with an interest in the intersection of math, physics, engineering, and software. You will join our Smart Sensors team and aid in the development of anomaly detection algorithms for RGAs. Along the way, you will complete a real data science project and be mentored by experienced data scientists and engineers.
Responsibilities
- Work within and learn existing models and codebase.
- Explore and visualize multivariate RGA datasets to identify patterns and anomalies.
- Critically evaluate model performance and potential improvements.
- Prototype and test algorithmic improvements.
- Present findings and results to the team.
Qualifications
- 1-2 years of experience with python required. Ideally including pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, matplotlib, and jupyter.
- Familiarity with linear algebra and multivariate statistics, including covariance, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA).
- Coursework or interest in physics and chemistry.
- Pursuing a degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, or similar. Ideally completed 2+ years.
- (Preferred but not required) Familiarity with mass spectrometry or RGAs.
During This Internship You Will Have The Opportunity To
- Read and discuss modern scientific literature on anomaly detection and related data science topics.
- Gain hands-on experience with real enterprise-scale datasets from semiconductor manufacturing.
- Be mentored by experienced data scientists and engineers.

Which companies sponsor visas for data science interns in New York?
Large financial institutions and tech firms are among the most active sponsors for data science interns in New York. Companies like JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, Bloomberg, IBM, and major consulting firms regularly hire international interns through OPT and CPT programs. Some larger employers also file H-1B petitions for interns who convert to full-time roles after graduation, though sponsorship at the intern stage is not guaranteed.
Which visa types are most common for data science intern roles in New York?
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) are the most common work authorizations for data science interns in New York, as most candidates are F-1 students at U.S. universities. CPT requires enrollment in a degree program with an academic internship component. OPT allows work after program completion. H-1B sponsorship for intern-level positions is uncommon but does occur at larger employers for conversion hires.
Which cities in New York have the most data science intern sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the vast majority of data science intern sponsorship opportunities in the state, concentrated in Manhattan neighborhoods like Midtown, the Flatiron District, and the Hudson Yards tech corridor. Albany and Buffalo have smaller but growing clusters tied to state government agencies and regional universities. For most international candidates, New York City is where intern hiring activity is highest by a significant margin.
How to find data science intern visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates and filters data science intern roles in New York by visa sponsorship availability, saving time compared to manually screening generic job listings. Because sponsorship for intern roles is often handled through F-1 OPT or CPT authorization rather than employer-filed petitions, Migrate Mate helps you identify which New York employers actively support those pathways, so you can focus your applications on companies with a real track record of hiring international interns.
What should international candidates know about data science intern hiring in New York?
New York's university pipeline, including Columbia, NYU, and Cornell Tech, feeds heavily into local intern hiring, and many employers in finance and tech are familiar with CPT and OPT paperwork. Candidates should confirm that their academic program allows CPT before accepting an offer, as eligibility varies by school and program. New York State does not impose additional work authorization requirements beyond federal standards, but the competitive intern market means early applications are important.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored data science intern jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
