Which companies sponsor visas for psychologists in New York?
The most active sponsors for psychology roles in New York include large health systems such as NewYork-Presbyterian, Northwell Health, NYC Health + Hospitals, and Montefiore Medical Center. Academic medical centers affiliated with Columbia, NYU, and Cornell also sponsor clinical and research psychologists. State-operated facilities under the New York Office of Mental Health are another consistent source of sponsorship, particularly for licensed clinical psychologists filling hard-to-recruit positions.
Which visa types are most common for psychology roles in New York?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for licensed psychologists in New York, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a doctoral degree. Many postdoctoral researchers and academic psychologists also enter on J-1 visa exchange visitor visas through university programs. O-1 visas are an option for psychologists with an exceptional research or publication record. Some New York employers also sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visa petitions for permanent positions.
Which cities in New York have the most psychology sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the large majority of psychology sponsorship opportunities in the state, driven by its concentration of hospitals, academic medical centers, and community mental health organizations. Within the city, Manhattan and the Bronx have particularly high demand given the density of major health systems. Buffalo and Rochester are secondary markets with active sponsorship through SUNY-affiliated hospitals and regional health networks. Albany has some activity through state government mental health agencies.
How to find psychology visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles that offer visa sponsorship, making it straightforward to search psychology positions in New York without sorting through employers who don't sponsor. You can narrow results by city or specialty area, which is useful given how differently Manhattan hospital systems, upstate academic centers, and community mental health organizations hire. Migrate Mate also surfaces patterns around which New York employers have active sponsorship histories for psychology roles.
Are there state-specific requirements for psychologists seeking visa sponsorship in New York?
Yes. New York requires psychologists to hold a state license issued by the New York State Education Department before practicing independently, which typically requires a doctoral degree and supervised postdoctoral hours. Visa sponsorship from an employer does not substitute for licensure. Some sponsors hire psychologists who are license-eligible and complete the process after arrival, but this varies by employer and role type. Postdoctoral research positions at universities may not require licensure but are often time-limited by visa conditions.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored psychology jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
