About the NC State College of Education
As one of the nation’s top-ranked colleges of education, NC State’s College of Education leads the way in North Carolina in preparing extraordinary educators, conducting transformational research, and engaging communities where they are to improve the educational outcomes of all learners and advance the greater good.
The college’s faculty are widely-recognized thought leaders who use their research to transform the practice of teaching, learning, and leading. They have particular strengths in improving technology-enhanced learning and teaching; fostering community-based learning and PK-16 partnerships; and innovating leadership and workforce development, educational policy, and evaluation. About two-thirds of the faculty are grant active. They are engaged in over 225 active projects totaling $151 million, making them the most productive in terms of research activity compared with other colleges of education in North Carolina and among the Top 5% in the nation. In FY24, the college’s research expenditures exceeded $20 million.
The college has over 1,600 students studying across five graduate certificates, seven undergraduate majors, two undergraduate minors, 13 master’s degrees, three Ph.D., and two Ed.D. programs housed in three academic departments: Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education; and Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, with approximately 130 tenure-track and professional-track faculty, 110 support and professional staff, and about 160 graduate and teaching assistants. The College of Education is also home to the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research, the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, and Elevate, NC State’s inclusive postsecondary education program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The college has over 18,000 living alumni, with over 6,000 working in public schools in every county in North Carolina. Those who are teachers rate among the highest in effectiveness on surveys of school employers in North Carolina.
NC State promotes an integrated approach to problem solving that transforms lives and provides leadership for social, economic, and technological development across North Carolina and around the world. NC State’s land grant mission of teaching, research and service is dedicated to the service of North Carolina and its people. Which visa types are most common for K-12 education roles in North Carolina?
The H-1B visa is used for K-12 roles that qualify as specialty occupations, typically requiring a bachelor's degree in education or a specific subject area. The J-1 visa is also common, particularly through cultural exchange teacher programs that bring international educators to underserved North Carolina districts. Some districts also sponsor TN visas for qualified Canadian and Mexican nationals in eligible teaching categories.
Which companies sponsor visas for K-12 educators in North Carolina?
North Carolina's largest public school districts are the primary sponsors. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Wake County Public School System, and Durham Public Schools have active international recruitment programs, particularly for subject areas with persistent shortages like special education, bilingual education, and STEM. Guilford County Schools and Cumberland County Schools also participate in J-1 exchange teacher programs to address staffing gaps.
How to find k 12 education visa sponsorship jobs in North Carolina?
Migrate Mate is a focused resource for international job seekers looking for K-12 education roles in North Carolina that offer visa sponsorship. You can filter specifically by state and role type to see which districts and schools are actively hiring internationally. This saves significant time compared to reviewing individual district career pages, especially when you need to confirm sponsorship availability before applying.
Which cities in North Carolina have the most K-12 education sponsorship jobs?
Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham account for the highest volume of K-12 sponsorship opportunities given the size of their school districts and rapid population growth. Fayetteville, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem also have notable activity, particularly through J-1 exchange teacher pipelines. Rural districts in eastern North Carolina sometimes actively recruit internationally for hard-to-fill special education and STEM positions.
Are there state-specific considerations for international K-12 educators seeking sponsorship in North Carolina?
North Carolina requires all classroom teachers to hold a valid state teaching license, which international educators must obtain through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Credential evaluation and subject-area testing requirements apply regardless of visa category. Districts sponsoring J-1 teachers typically coordinate licensing support as part of the placement process, but H-1B petitions generally require licensure to be in place before the petition is filed.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored k 12 education jobs in North Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
