Which companies sponsor visas for controls engineers in North Dakota?
Energy and agribusiness employers are the primary sponsors for controls engineer roles in North Dakota. Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Cargill, and Bobcat Company have sponsored H-1B visa positions for engineering talent. Smaller industrial automation firms and engineering contractors serving the Bakken oil patch also file petitions periodically, though sponsorship activity is more limited than in larger industrial states.
Which visa types are most common for controls engineer roles in North Dakota?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for controls engineers in North Dakota, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering. TN visas are an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose engineering credentials align with the USMCA professional categories. Some employers also consider O-1 visas for candidates with exceptional industry recognition.
Which cities in North Dakota have the most controls engineer sponsorship jobs?
Fargo is the largest hiring market for controls engineers in North Dakota, home to manufacturing operations and technology-adjacent employers. Bismarck sees demand tied to power generation and utility infrastructure. Williston and the western Bakken region attract controls engineering talent for oil and gas extraction and processing facilities, though sponsorship availability there depends heavily on energy market conditions.
How to find controls engineer visa sponsorship jobs in North Dakota?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles that offer visa sponsorship, making it easier to identify controls engineer positions with North Dakota employers without sorting through postings that don't support international candidates. You can browse by state and role type to focus on energy, manufacturing, and agricultural processing employers most active in sponsoring controls engineering talent in North Dakota.
Are there state-specific considerations for controls engineers seeking sponsorship in North Dakota?
North Dakota's Department of Labor and Human Services sets prevailing wage benchmarks that employers must meet when filing Labor Condition Applications for H-1B controls engineers. The state's economy is closely tied to energy and agriculture, so hiring cycles for controls roles often track commodity prices and capital project timelines. North Dakota State University in Fargo also produces engineering graduates who compete for the same sponsorship-eligible positions.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored controls engineer jobs in North Dakota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
