SUMMARY
The Cloud Platform Engineer is responsible for designing, engineering, and operating enterprise compute platforms across a hybrid environment spanning on-prem data centers and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This role focuses heavily on Google Compute Engine (GCE), cloud-native hypervisors, VMware virtualization, Unix OS and workload migrations across cloud and on-prem environments. The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who can translate architectural designs into scalable, automated, and production-ready solutions while driving standardization, automation, and operational excellence across Linux-based environments and IBM Power Systems platforms.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, build, and support compute platforms across hybrid environments, including on-prem data centers and Google Cloud (GCE).
- Engineer and manage cloud-native and traditional virtualization platforms, including GCE, VMware (vSphere/vCenter), and IBM Power Systems (PowerVM).
- Lead and execute migrations across environments (on-prem to cloud, cloud-to-cloud), leveraging tools such as VMware HCX and native cloud migration frameworks.
- Support and maintain IBM Power Systems infrastructure, including AIX-based workloads and integrations within hybrid environments.
- Translate high-level architecture designs into fully implemented, production-ready infrastructure solutions.
- Manage and optimize hybrid infrastructure environments, ensuring scalability, resiliency, and performance.
- Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using industry-standard tools (Terraform, Ansible, etc.) to enable repeatable and automated deployments.
- Drive automation initiatives across provisioning, configuration management, patching, and operational workflows.
- Build, configure, and maintain Linux-based systems across multiple distributions (RHEL, Ubuntu, SUSE), with AIX knowledge considered a strong advantage.
- Support and manage enterprise OS environments, including OS tuning, patching, security hardening, and lifecycle management.
- Partner with middleware, application, and DevOps teams to align infrastructure capabilities with application requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, promoting best practices and engineering standards.
- Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for infrastructure incidents and drive long-term stability improvements.
- Ensure compliance with enterprise standards, security policies, and configuration baselines.
- Participate in on-call rotation and provide support for critical production systems as needed.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Strong expertise in Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with deep focus on Google Compute Engine (GCE).
- Deep understanding of cloud-native hypervisors vs. traditional virtualization platforms.
- Advanced experience with VMware technologies, including vSphere, vCenter, and HCX migration capabilities.
- Hands-on experience with IBM Power Systems (Power Series), including PowerVM and AIX operating systems.
- Proven ability to manage and operate hybrid cloud environments (on-prem + cloud).
- Strong hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred) and automation frameworks.
- Deep knowledge of Linux operating systems across multiple distributions; AIX expertise highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of compute, storage, and networking fundamentals across both x86 and Power architectures.
- Experience implementing and optimizing automation-first engineering practices.
- Ability to convert architectural designs into deployable solutions with strong attention to execution quality.
- Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams (applications, middleware, networking, security).
- Demonstrated ownership, accountability, and pride in delivering high-quality engineering outcomes.
- Ability to mentor and develop junior engineers, driving technical capability uplift across the team.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.

Which companies sponsor visas for platform engineers in Texas?
Large technology and enterprise employers with significant Texas presences, including Dell Technologies, Texas Instruments, AT&T, Oracle, and Amazon Web Services, have consistent records of H-1B visa sponsorship for platform engineering roles. Austin-based growth-stage companies in cloud infrastructure and fintech also sponsor regularly, though smaller firms vary widely in their willingness and experience with the sponsorship process.
Which visa types are most common for platform engineer roles in Texas?
The H-1B is the most common visa for platform engineers in Texas, given that the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a computer science, engineering, or related degree. L-1B visas appear for intracompany transfers into Texas offices. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for TN visa status under the USMCA, which can be a more straightforward path for those nationalities.
Which cities in Texas have the most platform engineer sponsorship jobs?
Austin leads in sheer volume, driven by its concentration of technology companies and a growing number of engineering headquarters relocating from California. Dallas-Fort Worth follows closely, with strong demand from financial services, telecommunications, and enterprise software firms. Houston adds meaningful volume through energy-sector companies investing in cloud and infrastructure modernization. San Antonio has a smaller but active market centered on cybersecurity and defense-adjacent technology employers.
How to find platform engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Texas?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse platform engineer roles in Texas without sorting through positions that don't sponsor. The platform aggregates openings from employers with documented sponsorship activity, which is particularly useful in Texas where hiring activity is spread across Austin, Dallas, and Houston rather than concentrated in a single metro.
Are there any Texas-specific considerations for platform engineers pursuing visa sponsorship?
Texas has no state income tax, which affects prevailing wage comparisons since federal H-1B wage requirements are based on Department of Labor regional data and do not account for take-home differences across states. The University of Texas system and Texas A&M produce large engineering graduate pipelines, meaning employers in Austin and Houston are accustomed to sponsoring recent graduates on OPT before transitioning them to H-1B status.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored platform engineer jobs in Texas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
