Which companies sponsor visas for underwriters in Texas?
National insurers and financial institutions with large Texas operations are the most active sponsors for underwriter roles. Companies including Chubb, Zurich Insurance, Liberty Mutual, Travelers, and JPMorgan Chase have filed H-1B visa Labor Condition Applications for underwriting positions in Texas. Reinsurance firms and energy-sector specialty insurers based in Houston also appear regularly in Department of Labor disclosure data for sponsored underwriter roles.
Which visa types are most common for underwriter roles in Texas?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for underwriters in Texas, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in finance, risk management, economics, or a related field. Candidates from Canada and Mexico may qualify under the TN visa as financial analysts, which can cover certain underwriting functions. Australians may explore the E-3 visa, which follows a similar specialty occupation standard.
Which cities in Texas have the most underwriter sponsorship jobs?
Houston leads the state for underwriter sponsorship activity, driven by its concentration of energy, oil and gas, and marine insurance employers. Dallas-Fort Worth is the second-largest market, anchored by major insurance carriers and financial services firms with regional headquarters in the area. Austin has a smaller but growing presence, particularly for technology-focused underwriting roles within fintech and insurtech companies.
How to find underwriter visa sponsorship jobs in Texas?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it easier to identify underwriter roles in Texas where employers have indicated willingness to sponsor. Rather than sorting through general job boards, you can search directly for underwriter positions in Texas cities like Houston, Dallas, or Austin and see which employers have a documented history of sponsoring candidates in this field.
Are there any state-specific considerations for underwriters seeking visa sponsorship in Texas?
Texas has no state income tax, which is relevant context for evaluating compensation packages, though prevailing wage requirements under the H-1B program are set by federal Department of Labor standards for each metro area and job classification. Houston's energy insurance sector and Dallas's commercial insurance hubs each attract candidates with specific industry backgrounds, so aligning your experience with the dominant sector in your target city can strengthen your candidacy with sponsoring employers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored underwriter jobs in Texas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
