Which companies and institutions sponsor visas for physicists in Wisconsin?
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is the largest sponsor of physics-related visas in the state, frequently filing H-1B visa petitions for research scientists, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty. The Morgridge Institute for Research, GE Healthcare (based in Waukesha), and medical technology firms along the Milwaukee corridor also sponsor physicists, particularly those specializing in medical imaging and radiation physics.
Which visa types are most common for physics roles in Wisconsin?
The H-1B is the most common visa for physics positions in Wisconsin, covering research scientists, medical physicists, and applied physics engineers at universities and private employers. J-1 visas are widely used for postdoctoral researchers at UW-Madison and affiliated institutes. Physicists with extraordinary ability may qualify for the O-1A, which bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely.
Which cities in Wisconsin have the most physics visa sponsorship jobs?
Madison is the clear center of physics hiring in Wisconsin, driven by UW-Madison, the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, and affiliated research organizations. Milwaukee is the secondary hub, with opportunities at Marquette University, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and medical device and imaging companies in the greater metro area, particularly in the Waukesha and Brookfield corridors.
How to find physics visa sponsorship jobs in Wisconsin?
Migrate Mate filters physics job listings specifically to employers who have sponsored work visas, making it straightforward to identify Wisconsin-based opportunities at universities, research institutes, and private employers. Because physics roles vary widely from academic research to medical physics to instrumentation engineering, using Migrate Mate's role and state filters helps narrow results to positions where sponsorship is a realistic part of the hiring process.
Are there state-specific factors that affect physics visa sponsorship in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin's physics hiring is heavily tied to its research university pipeline. UW-Madison's strength in high-energy physics, biophysics, and medical physics means many sponsored roles are postdoctoral or research-track positions with defined project timelines, which affects visa duration and renewal expectations. Medical physicists seeking board certification through the American Board of Radiology should confirm how their visa timeline aligns with certification requirements before accepting an offer.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physics jobs in Wisconsin?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
