Which companies sponsor visas for physicists in Texas?
National laboratories and research universities are among the most consistent visa sponsors for physicists in Texas. Texas A&M University, the University of Texas at Austin, and UT Southwestern Medical Center regularly sponsor H-1B visa workers in physics-related roles. In the energy sector, companies like ExxonMobil, Schlumberger, and Halliburton have sponsored physicists and applied scientists, particularly for roles in geophysics and instrumentation.
Which visa types are most common for physics roles in Texas?
The H-1B is the most common visa for physicists in Texas, as physics roles in research, instrumentation, and applied science typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. J-1 visas are common for postdoctoral researchers at universities. Physicists with exceptional credentials may also qualify for the O-1A or EB-1A pathways, which do not require employer-specific sponsorship.
How to find physics visa sponsorship jobs in Texas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters physics roles in Texas by visa sponsorship history, so you can focus on employers who have sponsored before. Search the Migrate Mate job board for physics positions in Texas and filter by location and role type. University research postings and national laboratory career portals are also worth monitoring directly alongside Migrate Mate.
Which cities in Texas have the most physics sponsorship jobs?
Austin and Houston lead in physics sponsorship opportunities. Austin's concentration of research universities, semiconductor firms, and tech companies creates demand for physicists in materials science, photonics, and R&D. Houston's energy industry drives hiring in geophysics, acoustics, and applied physics. The Dallas-Fort Worth metro adds opportunities in defense, aerospace, and medical imaging through employers like Lockheed Martin and major hospital systems.
Are there any Texas-specific considerations for physicists seeking visa sponsorship?
Texas has a strong pipeline from its flagship research universities, particularly UT Austin and Texas A&M, which regularly sponsor international students transitioning from OPT into H-1B status. The state's energy industry creates demand for physicists with backgrounds in acoustics, fluid dynamics, and geophysics that is less common in other states. Physicists in STEM-designated roles on F-1 OPT may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving additional time to secure sponsored employment.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physics jobs in Texas?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
