How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Regional Planner
Target planning consultancies and government contractors
Private firms like AECOM, WSP, and HDR regularly sponsor planners. Government contractors often have more visa sponsorship experience than direct municipal employers.
Emphasize your specialized planning software skills
Highlight proficiency in GIS, AutoCAD, SketchUp, and planning-specific tools like CommunityViz. These technical skills strengthen the specialty occupation argument for your visa petition.
Consider metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs)
MPOs handle regional transportation and land use planning across multiple jurisdictions. They often sponsor international talent and offer more visa flexibility than individual municipalities.
Network through American Planning Association chapters
APA local chapters host regular networking events where you can meet hiring managers. Many planning directors attend these meetings and are familiar with visa processes.
Research state-level planning agencies
State departments of transportation and environmental agencies employ regional planners for corridor studies and environmental impact assessments. They frequently sponsor H-1B candidates.
Highlight your AICP certification path
Mention your eligibility for AICP certification in applications. Employers value planners who can obtain professional certification, as it demonstrates long-term commitment to the field.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What degree do I need for H-1B sponsorship as a regional planner?
You need a bachelor's degree in urban planning, geography, public administration, or a closely related field. Some employers accept degrees in civil engineering or environmental studies if combined with relevant planning experience. The degree must directly relate to regional planning work to satisfy specialty occupation requirements.
Do regional planners get approved for H-1B visas?
Yes, regional planners have strong H-1B approval rates because the role clearly requires specialized knowledge in land use planning, zoning regulations, and community development. USCIS recognizes urban planning as a specialty occupation, especially when the position involves complex regional coordination and policy development.
Can I get sponsored without U.S. planning experience?
Yes, but you'll need to demonstrate transferable skills from international planning projects. Emphasize experience with similar planning frameworks, GIS software, environmental impact assessment, or transportation planning. Many consulting firms value diverse international planning perspectives for global projects.
Which visa options work best for regional planners?
H-1B is most common, but consider TN visa if you're Canadian or Mexican with qualifying credentials. EB-2 green cards through PERM are possible for senior planners. O-1 visas may work for planners with internationally recognized expertise in sustainable development or disaster recovery planning.
Do government planning jobs sponsor visas?
Direct government positions rarely sponsor visas due to funding restrictions and citizenship preferences. However, government contractors and consulting firms working on public projects frequently sponsor planners. Focus on private firms that hold government contracts rather than direct municipal employment.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Regional Planner jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
