Accounting Intern Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a accounting intern in Iowa?
Becoming an accounting intern in Iowa starts with enrollment in an accredited accounting or business program at an Iowa institution such as the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, or Drake University. No state license is required for an internship, though working toward the 150 credit hours needed to sit for the CPA exam administered by the Iowa Accountancy Examining Board strengthens your candidacy. Most firms recruit through on-campus recruiting events, departmental job boards, and direct applications during the fall and spring semesters.
Which companies hire accounting interns in Iowa?
Employers hiring accounting interns in Iowa right now include CVS Health, Hy-Vee, and Enterprise Mobility, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Iowa's concentration of insurance headquarters, regional banks, and large agricultural firms creates a broader-than-average mix of corporate and public accounting internship opportunities across the state.
Which Iowa cities have the most accounting intern jobs?
The Iowa cities with the most accounting intern openings are Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City. Des Moines dominates the market because it is home to a dense cluster of insurance companies, financial institutions, and the regional offices of national public accounting firms, while Cedar Rapids and Iowa City draw demand from manufacturing headquarters, university-affiliated organizations, and regional CPA practices.
Are there remote accounting intern jobs in Iowa?
Yes, though they are less common than in fully desk-based roles because most accounting internships involve hands-on exposure to client files, office workflows, and in-person team supervision. About 26% of accounting intern openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with remote arrangements most often found in bookkeeping support, data entry, and financial analysis tasks rather than audit or tax preparation work requiring physical document access.
How can I get hired as a accounting intern in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to public accounting firms that run structured intern programs for students with no prior work experience, including regional Iowa firms such as RSM's Des Moines office, Eide Bailly, and LWBJ. Volunteering with VITA, Iowa's IRS-sponsored tax assistance program for low-income filers, provides documented hands-on experience that hiring managers recognize. Adjacent roles such as accounts payable clerk or bookkeeping assistant at a local Iowa business can also bridge the gap, and progress toward CPA exam eligibility through the Iowa Accountancy Examining Board gives applications a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to accounting intern jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to accounting intern jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your program, availability, and skills, and apply directly to each one that fits.
