Engineering Intern Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a engineering intern in Iowa?
Most engineering intern roles in Iowa require enrollment in an accredited bachelor's degree program in engineering at an Iowa institution such as Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, or the University of Northern Iowa. Iowa does not require a state license to work as an intern, but employers typically expect completion of foundational coursework before placement. Students pursuing professional engineering careers later register with the Iowa Engineering and Land Surveying Examining Board once they meet licensure requirements after graduation.
Which companies hire engineering interns in Iowa?
Employers hiring engineering interns in Iowa right now include Bolton & Menk, POET, and Link Manufacturing, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Iowa's manufacturing base and large agricultural technology firms create recurring intern pipelines that renew each semester and summer term.
Which Iowa cities have the most engineering intern jobs?
Des Moines, Ames, and Cedar Rapids account for the most engineering intern openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives demand through its aerospace and financial infrastructure employers, Cedar Rapids anchors manufacturing and technology hiring, and Iowa City benefits from the University of Iowa's research programs and affiliated healthcare and engineering organizations that recruit interns year-round.
Are there remote engineering intern jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. About 45% of engineering intern openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the hands-on, lab, and facility-based nature of most engineering intern work in the state. Data analysis, software-adjacent engineering, and project coordination tasks are the sub-functions most likely to carry a partial or fully remote arrangement.
How can I get hired as a engineering intern in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to structured intern programs at Iowa's large manufacturing and technology employers before completing your first full year of coursework. John Deere, Collins Aerospace, and Iowa utilities such as MidAmerican Energy run formal early-career and sophomore intern cohorts that do not require prior work history. Building a portfolio of class projects in SolidWorks or AutoCAD and earning an Engineer-in-Training designation through Iowa State's FE exam preparation resources gives candidates a measurable edge over peers without documented technical output.
Where can I find and apply to engineering intern jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to engineering intern jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings updated regularly. Search for roles that match your engineering discipline and target city, then apply directly to the postings that fit your background and availability.
