Aerospace Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a aerospace engineer in California?
Most California aerospace engineering roles require at least a bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program. California does not mandate a state license to work as an aerospace engineer in industry, but senior and leadership roles frequently prefer or require Professional Engineer licensure through the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists. Defense positions additionally require passing a federal security clearance investigation.
Which companies hire aerospace engineers in California?
Companies currently hiring aerospace engineers in California include Trigo, Howmet Aerospace, and PPG, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's defense corridors in Los Angeles and San Diego and its growing commercial space sector in the Mojave region make the state one of the most diverse hiring markets for aerospace engineers in the country.
Which California cities have the most aerospace engineer jobs?
Torrance, Sylmar, and Inglewood consistently lead California in aerospace engineer openings. Los Angeles and its surrounding communities anchor demand through the dense cluster of major defense contractors and commercial aviation firms based there, San Diego draws heavily from Navy and Marine Corps program offices and their prime contractors, and Sacramento-area openings reflect both McClellan Park's aerospace tenants and state government aviation agencies.
Are there remote aerospace engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Aerospace engineering is heavily hands-on, requiring access to test facilities, secure labs, and classified systems that cannot move off-site. About 7% of aerospace engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions tend to be concentrated in analytical or model-based systems engineering work rather than hardware design, integration, or testing roles.
How can I get hired as a aerospace engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a formal new-graduate or early-career rotational program at a major California defense or space employer. Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Technologies, and SpaceX all run structured associate engineer programs that place recent graduates into supervised roles across disciplines. Internship experience at a California-based aerospace firm is the credential that matters most, and candidates who hold an active or in-process security clearance from a university research program or ROTC background move to the front of the line for defense positions.
Where can I find and apply to aerospace engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to aerospace engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across defense contractors, commercial space companies, and aviation firms. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match.
