Tips for Your Aerospace Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to clearance requirements
Many aerospace engineer postings require or prefer a security clearance. Flag your clearance level, status, and sponsoring agency explicitly near the top of your resume so hiring managers can filter you in without digging through your work history.
Highlight mission-specific technical tools
Postings in propulsion, structures, and avionics almost always call out specific software: NASTRAN, MATLAB, ANSYS, or CATIA. Match the exact tool names from each job description to your resume rather than listing a generic 'CAD and simulation' line.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists aerospace engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target your job search by program type
Defense programs, commercial launch, and satellite manufacturing each move on different hiring cycles and require different clearances and toolsets. Searching by program type or contract vehicle rather than just job title surfaces openings better matched to your actual background.
Prepare a technical portfolio before interviewing
Aerospace interviews routinely include design reviews or whiteboard analyses of trade studies, load paths, or thermodynamic cycles. Organize two or three past projects into a brief technical summary you can walk through clearly and concisely in a 30-minute session.
Negotiate relocation and clearance timing separately
Clearance-required roles often have long onboarding gaps between offer and start date. In your negotiation, address relocation separately from your start date, and ask the employer to confirm whether interim work is available while your clearance processes.
Aerospace Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most aerospace engineers?
The most active employers for aerospace engineers right now are Trigo, TRIGO ADR Americas, and PPG, and the most openings are in California, Texas, and Washington, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Defense primes and commercial launch companies tend to drive the largest sustained volume of openings.
How many aerospace engineer jobs are remote?
About 18% of aerospace engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most engineering disciplines because hardware work, lab access, and clearance requirements often demand on-site presence. Systems engineering, mission analysis, and software-heavy roles are the sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How do you become an aerospace engineer?
Earn a bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program, since most employers require it as a baseline. Build hands-on experience through internships, co-ops, or university research projects involving real design or analysis work. Develop proficiency in at least one industry-standard simulation tool and, if you plan to work in defense, begin the clearance eligibility process as early as possible by accepting a role that sponsors it.
How do you get hired as an aerospace engineer with little or no experience?
Target new-grad rotational programs at defense primes and aerospace manufacturers, which are specifically designed to develop engineers without professional experience. Emphasize any capstone design projects, CubeSat work, rocketry competitions, or wind tunnel testing from your degree program. A strong internship in a related engineering discipline can also bridge the gap, especially if the work involved structural, propulsion, or avionics analysis.
What does the aerospace engineer interview process look like?
Most aerospace engineer interviews move through a recruiter screen, a technical phone interview covering fundamentals like orbital mechanics, stress analysis, or thermodynamics depending on the role, and then an on-site or virtual panel with engineers who may present a design problem or trade study for you to work through. Cleared roles add a background investigation stage before a final offer is extended, which can extend the overall timeline significantly.
Where can I find and apply to aerospace engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to aerospace engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your background and apply directly to each one that fits.
