AI Data Engineer Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ai data engineer in Massachusetts?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, data engineering, or a closely related field is the standard starting point for ai data engineers in Massachusetts. No state-issued license is required. Massachusetts employers, particularly those in the Route 128 technology corridor and the Seaport innovation district, typically look for candidates with a strong portfolio of data pipeline projects, cloud certifications from AWS or Microsoft Azure, and familiarity with ML infrastructure tooling alongside their formal education.
How much do AI data engineers make in Massachusetts?
AI data engineers in Massachusetts earn a median of about $131,750 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $81,030 for the lowest 10% to over $206,220 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ai data engineers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring ai data engineers in Massachusetts right now include Amazon, Novartis, and State Street, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's dense concentration of life sciences companies, quantitative finance firms, and enterprise software vendors makes it one of the more consistent states for ai data engineering demand outside of major West Coast hubs.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most ai data engineer jobs?
Boston, Cambridge, and Massachusetts have the most ai data engineer openings in Massachusetts. Boston and Cambridge drive the bulk of demand through their biotech clusters, academic medical centers, and fintech firms, while Waltham and Burlington attract openings from the established enterprise technology companies headquartered along the Route 128 corridor.
Are there remote ai data engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 60% of ai data engineer openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how thoroughly the work runs on cloud infrastructure. Pipeline development, model integration, and data platform work are the parts of the role most commonly performed fully remote, while roles tied to regulated healthcare or financial data often require at least some on-site days.
How can I get hired as a ai data engineer in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a data analyst or software engineering role into ai data engineering by building ML pipeline projects and earning a cloud platform certification. Massachusetts employers like Fidelity Investments and Harvard-affiliated medical institutions run associate and new-graduate technology programs that accept candidates without direct ai engineering experience. Targeting titles like junior data engineer or ML platform associate and assembling a public portfolio on a code repository gives applicants in Massachusetts a concrete edge over those relying on coursework alone.
