AI Data Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ai data engineer in Virginia?
Most ai data engineer roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, or a related technical field, with a master's degree preferred at senior levels. Virginia has no state-issued license for this role, so the path runs through technical skills and certifications: cloud credentials from AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud carry real weight with Virginia employers. Many contractors in Northern Virginia additionally require candidates to be eligible for a federal security clearance before extending an offer.
How much do AI data engineers make in Virginia?
AI data engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $126,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,420 for the lowest 10% to over $207,890 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ai data engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring ai data engineers in Virginia right now include Amazon Web Services, Deloitte, and Booz Allen Hamilton, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's large concentration of federal contractors and defense technology firms means hiring is steady across both commercial and government-adjacent sectors throughout the year.
Which Virginia cities have the most ai data engineer jobs?
Arlington, McLean, and Ashburn account for the most ai data engineer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia leads because of its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and cloud infrastructure campuses, while Richmond draws hiring from financial services firms and state government technology initiatives, and Reston anchors a tech corridor with major consulting and IT services employers.
Are there remote ai data engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 67% of ai data engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the role's core work, including pipeline development, model training, and data architecture, translates to distributed teams. The exception is positions tied to classified government programs, which typically require on-site presence at facilities in Northern Virginia or the surrounding area.
How can I get hired as a ai data engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from a data analyst or data analyst associate role, which many Virginia employers use as a feeder into ai data engineering. Large Northern Virginia contractors such as Leidos and Booz Allen Hamilton run associate and early-career programs that recruit directly from Virginia Tech, George Mason University, and the University of Virginia. Building a portfolio of end-to-end pipeline projects on public datasets, earning an entry-level cloud certification, and applying to analyst or junior data roles at those contractors gives candidates a concrete foothold without prior engineering experience.
Where can I find and apply to ai data engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to ai data engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across Northern Virginia, Richmond, Reston, and beyond. Find roles that fit your experience and location preference and apply directly to the employer through each listing.
