Machine Learning Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a machine learning engineer in Virginia?
Virginia does not require a state-issued license to work in machine learning. Most employers expect at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, or a closely related field, with a master's degree preferred for research-focused roles. Building a portfolio of deployed models and contributing to open-source projects strengthens a candidacy significantly. Many Virginia federal contractors also require candidates to be eligible for a security clearance.
Which companies hire machine learning engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring machine learnings in Virginia right now include Capital One, Booz Allen Hamilton, and SAIC, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's dense concentration of defense contractors and federal agencies in Northern Virginia means many of these roles sit at the intersection of machine learning and national security applications.
Which Virginia cities have the most machine learning jobs?
McLean, Arlington, and Ashburn account for the largest share of machine learning openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because it is home to major federal agencies, the headquarters of large defense contractors, and Amazon's second headquarters, all of which drive sustained demand for machine learning talent across the region.
Are there remote machine learning jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 55% of machine learning openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of the work. Research, modeling, and data pipeline roles are the most likely to offer fully remote arrangements, while positions tied to classified government programs typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a machine learning engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an associate or junior data scientist role, which many Virginia employers use as a pipeline into machine learning teams. Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos both run new graduate programs that place early-career candidates on applied AI projects. A strong GitHub portfolio demonstrating end-to-end model work, combined with a relevant certification such as AWS Machine Learning Specialty, gives candidates a concrete edge over peers with equivalent academic backgrounds.
Where can I find and apply to machine learning jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to machine learning jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings updated regularly. Search for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
