Machine Learning Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a machine learning engineer in Massachusetts?
Machine learning does not require a state-issued license in Massachusetts. Employers typically look for a bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field, with a master's degree strongly preferred for research-oriented roles. Building a portfolio of applied projects, contributing to open-source repositories, and gaining hands-on experience through internships at Boston-area biotech, defense, or fintech firms provides the most direct path to a first role.
Which companies hire machine learning engineers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring machine learnings in Massachusetts right now include Lila Sciences, Whoop, and Wayfair, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's dense concentration of biotech companies, defense contractors, and fintech firms means demand is spread across multiple industries rather than a single dominant sector.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most machine learning jobs?
Boston, Cambridge, and Waltham have the most machine learning openings in Massachusetts. Boston and Cambridge dominate because of the research institutions, venture-backed startups, and established biotech and financial services headquarters clustered there, while suburban corridors like Waltham and Burlington along Route 128 contribute significantly through the defense and enterprise software companies based in that area.
Are there remote machine learning jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 33% of machine learning openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves writing code, running experiments, and reviewing results rather than on-site lab work. Roles that require access to proprietary hardware, classified systems, or on-premises data infrastructure tend to be the exceptions requiring in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a machine learning engineer in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to associate data scientist or junior ML engineer roles at Massachusetts companies that run structured new-graduate programs, including large biotech employers and defense contractors that actively recruit from MIT, Northeastern, and UMass Amherst. Lateral moves from software engineering or data analytics roles are common. A strong project portfolio on GitHub demonstrating end-to-end model development, along with relevant coursework or a master's degree, gives candidates without prior industry experience a concrete edge.
Where can I find and apply to machine learning jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to machine learning jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and location, and apply directly through each listing.
