AI Research Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ai research engineer in New York?
AI research engineer roles in New York do not require a state-issued license, so the path centers on education and demonstrated research experience. Most New York employers expect at least a master's degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related field, with a PhD preferred at senior levels. Building a portfolio through published work, open-source contributions, or internships at New York-based research labs strengthens a candidacy considerably before applying.
How much do AI research engineers make in New York?
AI research engineers in New York earn a median of about $181,990 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $95,260 for the lowest 10% to over $314,130 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ai research engineers in New York?
Employers hiring ai research engineers in New York right now include JPMorganChase, Distyl, and Bloomberg, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's dense concentration of financial institutions, media conglomerates, and enterprise technology firms means that research engineering roles appear across a wider range of industries than in most other markets.
Which New York cities have the most ai research engineer jobs?
New York, New York City, and New York State have the most ai research engineer openings in New York. Concentration in New York City reflects the city's role as a global hub for finance, media, and enterprise technology, all of which have expanded in-house AI research teams, while smaller metros in the list typically owe their volume to the regional offices of large tech or financial employers headquartered in Manhattan.
Are there remote ai research engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields, because ai research engineering is largely a desk-based, analytical discipline that translates well to distributed work. About 54% of ai research engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the broad adoption of flexible arrangements across tech and financial employers in the region. Model training, literature review, and experimentation are the parts of the role most commonly performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a ai research engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a research internship or a rotational program at a New York-based technology or financial firm, where candidates without full-time experience can demonstrate applied skills directly. IBM Research in Manhattan and several large banks run structured early-career programs for recent graduates. Roles titled junior ML engineer or research associate often serve as entry points, and a strong GitHub portfolio or a co-authored paper meaningfully offsets limited professional experience for New York hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to ai research engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to ai research engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and target employers, and apply directly to each listing without any intermediary step.
