Architectural Designer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a architectural designer in New York?
You become an architectural designer in New York by earning a professional degree in architecture from a NAAB-accredited program, completing the Architectural Experience Program hours, and passing the Architect Registration Examination. Licensure is issued through the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions. Many firms hire candidates as architectural designers or project designers before full licensure, using the role as the practical AXP experience track.
How much do architectural designers make in New York?
Architectural designers in New York earn a median of about $76,260 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,390 for the lowest 10% to over $113,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire architectural designers in New York?
Employers hiring architectural designers in New York right now include APD Engineering & Architecture, PLLC, Stantec, and Colliers Engineering & Design, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of large commercial, cultural, and residential firms means the hiring pool is exceptionally broad, with both global practices and specialized boutique studios posting consistently throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most architectural designer jobs?
New York, Victor, and Albany account for the most architectural designer openings in New York. New York City dominates the distribution given its concentration of major architecture firms, large-scale commercial development, and institutional clients, while Albany and Buffalo draw demand from government projects, university expansion, and regional commercial growth anchored by local and national practices with offices there.
Are there remote architectural designer jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're limited, since architectural design involves coordination with contractors, site visits, and hands-on document review that generally requires in-person presence. About 15% of architectural designer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting a growing but still selective share of the market. Schematic design, renderings, and BIM coordination are the tasks most commonly performed remotely within hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a architectural designer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to firms that hire recent graduates into architectural designer or junior designer roles, where you work under a licensed architect as part of your AXP hours. Large New York firms like Gensler and Perkins Eastman run structured associate programs for new graduates. A strong portfolio of studio work, proficiency in Revit, and any internship experience at a licensed firm gives candidates a meaningful edge in a competitive applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to architectural designer jobs in New York?
