Art Director Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an art director in Texas?
Most art directors in Texas enter the field with a bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communications, or fine arts, then build several years of experience as a designer or senior designer before stepping into a director role. Texas does not require a state-issued license to practice as an art director. Large Texas agencies and in-house brand teams typically promote from within or hire candidates with a strong portfolio and demonstrated team leadership experience.
How much do art directors make in Texas?
Art directors in Texas earn a median of about $88,270 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $55,730 for the lowest 10% to over $172,130 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire art directors in Texas?
Employers hiring art directors in Texas right now include Denton Independent School District, Electronic Arts (EA), and Nexstar Media Group, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major regional ad agencies, and fast-growing consumer brands creates consistent demand for art director talent well beyond the largest corporate names.
Which Texas cities have the most art director jobs?
Austin, Denton, and Lubbock have the most art director openings in Texas. Dallas-Fort Worth leads because of its dense cluster of corporate headquarters and established advertising agencies, Austin draws demand from its technology and startup ecosystem, and Houston's energy, healthcare, and media sectors sustain a steady stream of creative leadership roles.
Are there remote art director jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than many creative roles. About 0% of art director openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on digital deliverables and cloud-based collaboration tools. Brand strategy, digital campaign oversight, and motion graphics direction are the sub-areas most commonly offered on a remote or flexible basis.
How can I get hired as an art director in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing a junior designer or graphic designer role at a Texas agency or in-house team and building toward a director title over three to five years. Large Texas employers such as advertising agencies in Dallas and Austin, retail brand teams like H-E-B, and media companies in Houston regularly hire entry-level designers who grow into art direction. A polished portfolio that shows conceptual range, a completed design internship, and familiarity with motion and digital formats give candidates a clear edge for that first creative role.
