Automation Engineer Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a automation engineer job in Houston?
Focus your search on Houston's Energy Corridor and Greenspoint, where oil and gas operators, refinery operators, and industrial automation integrators hire most actively. Hands-on experience with PLCs, SCADA systems, or DCS platforms is the most decisive differentiator in this market. Candidates who can show project experience in refining, pipeline control, or chemical processing move to the front of the line with Houston employers consistently.
Which companies hire automation engineers in Houston?
Houston automation engineer roles are posted by Eli Lilly, Baylor Miraca Genetics Laboratories, and HMH and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's hiring mix leans heavily toward energy majors, EPC firms, and industrial automation integrators serving the petrochemical and refining sectors.
Are there remote automation engineer jobs in Houston?
Yes, but selectively, automation engineering often requires on-site work for equipment commissioning, PLC programming at the plant level, and systems integration, so fully remote roles are less common than in purely desk-based fields. About 33% of automation engineer openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with hybrid arrangements most common for design, documentation, and project coordination roles at Houston-area engineering firms.
How can I get a automation engineer job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is through EPC and systems integration firms that hire junior controls engineers or automation technicians for large refinery and petrochemical projects. Internships or co-op programs with Houston-area industrial contractors give hands-on PLC and SCADA exposure that translates directly into entry-level offers. A degree in electrical, chemical, or mechanical engineering strengthens your candidacy, and familiarity with Honeywell or Emerson platforms is a concrete plus with many local employers.
Which industries hire the most automation engineers in Houston?
Most automation engineer openings in Houston sit in Biotechnology & Pharmaceuticals, Energy, and Manufacturing, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's role as a global hub for energy production, refining, and chemical manufacturing means those sectors generate far more local automation engineering demand than any other industry in the city.
