Our Mission
(*Comscore, Total Visits, March 2026)
Day to Day
- Write software to fulfill larger, less well-defined full-stack work requests and backend recommendation and search features for the main site-search engine.
- Take on large, loosely defined priorities and broad technical challenges, independently researching, designing, and implementing solutions within our large-scale distributed architecture from scratch without requiring granular product management specifications.
- Own, improve, and evaluate services in production by analyzing logs, traces, and metrics to understand performance and business value- prioritize, investigate, and implement fixes for performance, reliability, and efficacy.
- Proactively analyze logs, trace metrics, manage resource utilization, and resolve issues before they impact users or SLAs.
- Perform deep systems analysis to act as an escalation point for complex distributed systems issues, untangling and fixing problems across both legacy and modern codebases, inside and outside of the services that the team owns.
- Serve as a technical bridge for cross-functional collaboration by digging into what partner teams are building, conducting design and code reviews, and ensuring interacting architectures align with our operational standards and SLAs.
- Evaluate high-level architectural decisions that balance engineering time against infrastructure costs (e.g., deciding whether to optimize an algorithm or scale compute power to free up engineering resources).
- Lead process improvements, write comprehensive system documentation, and mentor peer and junior engineers by providing constructive feedback on code, design, and execution.
- Independently identify and design new systems and enhancements to existing systems to support substantial new features and products, as well as improve quality, scalability, and performance.
- Work with business partners to clarify requirements, to decompose large requests into smaller ones that can be executed sequentially or in parallel, and to refine and clarify Product and Engineering goals and ensure that they align with company objectives and are sufficiently defined for junior developers to successfully work on.
- Share your expertise on products and technologies by mentoring other engineers and by helping them prioritize work items based on urgency, business impact, and goals.

Backend Software Developer Jobs in Austin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a backend software developer job in Austin?
Focus on Austin's strongest hiring sectors: enterprise SaaS, fintech, and healthtech, which concentrate along the Domain corridor, downtown Second Street, and the East Austin tech belt. Companies here prioritize proficiency in distributed systems, cloud-native stacks like AWS or GCP, and API design. Candidates who have contributed to open-source projects or can show production-scale work get attention faster in this market than those with credentials alone.
Which companies hire backend software developers in Austin?
Employers hiring backend software developers in Austin right now include Commerce, Realtor, and Apple, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Austin's mix of Fortune 500 engineering outposts, fast-growing SaaS companies, and well-funded fintech and healthtech startups means openings appear across a wide range of company sizes and stages.
Are there remote backend software developer jobs in Austin?
Yes, and backend software development is well-suited to remote work given that the role centers on writing, testing, and deploying code rather than on-site operations. About 77% of backend software developer openings tied to Austin are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly Austin's tech employers have adopted flexible arrangements. API development, cloud infrastructure, and microservices work tend to be the most remote-friendly specialties in the local market.
How can I get a backend software developer job in Austin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Austin is through junior or associate engineer roles at mid-stage SaaS and fintech startups, which hire more aggressively at the entry level than large enterprises. Austin Coding Academy and the University of Texas coding programs produce graduates that local startups recruit directly. Building a portfolio of deployed side projects, contributing to Austin-area tech meetups like Austin on Rails, and targeting companies with structured engineering rotations all improve your chances with limited professional experience.
Which industries hire the most backend software developers in Austin?
Most backend software developer openings in Austin sit in Energy, Fintech, and News & Publishing, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Austin's growth as a hub for enterprise software, financial technology, and digital health has made these sectors the primary engines of backend engineering demand in the city.
