Backend Software Developer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a backend software developer in Texas?
Backend software development has no state-issued license in Texas, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skill. Most employers expect at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited Texas institution such as UT Austin, Texas A&M, or UT Dallas. Candidates who build a portfolio of deployed projects, contribute to open-source repositories, or complete recognized certifications in cloud platforms strengthen their candidacy considerably.
How much do backend software developers make in Texas?
Backend software developers in Texas earn a median of about $132,150 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,600 for the lowest 10% to over $183,680 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire backend software developers in Texas?
Employers hiring backend software developers in Texas right now include Apple, NVIDIA, and Photon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, large energy firms, and fast-growing fintech companies means consistent backend hiring across both mature engineering organizations and high-growth product teams.
Which Texas cities have the most backend software developer jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Irving have the most backend software developer openings in Texas. Austin's dense cluster of technology companies and corporate relocations drives the highest concentration, while Dallas hosts major telecommunications and financial services headquarters and Houston's demand is anchored by energy technology and healthcare IT operations, meaning smaller metros in the list often reflect a single large employer's engineering campus.
Are there remote backend software developer jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 17% of backend software developer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the work translates to distributed teams. The portions of the role most commonly offered remotely are API development, code review, and systems integration work, while on-site arrangements tend to cluster around regulated industries like defense contracting and healthcare data systems.
How can I get hired as a backend software developer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate engineering role or associate software developer position at a large Texas employer. Companies like Dell Technologies, USAA, and Texas Instruments run structured new-grad hiring programs that accept candidates with internship experience or strong academic projects in lieu of full professional history. Lateral entry from QA engineering, IT support, or data analyst roles is also common, and earning a cloud certification such as AWS Certified Developer strengthens a thin resume meaningfully.
Where can I find and apply to backend software developer jobs in Texas?
