Biochemist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a biochemist in California?
Becoming a biochemist in California typically requires a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, chemistry, or molecular biology as a minimum, with most research and industry roles preferring a master's degree or PhD. California does not require a state-issued license specifically for biochemists, but positions in clinical laboratory settings may require a Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the California Department of Public Health. Building hands-on lab experience through internships or academic research at California universities strengthens candidacy significantly.
How much do biochemists make in California?
Biochemists in California earn a median of about $139,580 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,580 for the lowest 10% to over $208,210 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire biochemists in California?
Employers hiring biochemists in California right now include Revvity, Amgen, and Arc Institute, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of biopharma headquarters, agricultural biotech companies, and medical device manufacturers means hiring activity stays strong across multiple industries and company sizes throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most biochemist jobs?
San Diego, Los Angeles, and Palo Alto have the most biochemist job openings in California. San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area dominate because they host the largest clusters of biopharma and biotech headquarters in the state, while Los Angeles draws demand from its growing life sciences corridor and the presence of large academic medical centers and research institutions.
Are there remote biochemist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Biochemist work is inherently hands-on, with most roles requiring access to laboratory equipment, controlled environments, or regulated research facilities that cannot be replicated remotely. About 0% of biochemist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve data analysis, regulatory writing, or scientific communications rather than bench research.
How can I get hired as a biochemist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a research associate or lab technician role, which California biopharma employers and universities regularly post as stepping stones for candidates without industry experience. Companies like Genentech and Gilead run structured new-graduate programs, and UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, and Stanford operate research assistant positions that build direct lab credentials. A strong undergraduate research project, a relevant California Community College certificate in laboratory sciences, or completion of a post-baccalaureate research program at a UC campus can distinguish a candidate in a competitive applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to biochemist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to biochemist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring right now. Find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly from the listing without any additional steps required.
