Certified Pharmacy Technician Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified pharmacy technician in Iowa?
You must register with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy before working as a pharmacy technician in the state. Registration requires a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of a board-approved training program. Most Iowa employers also require national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the National Healthcareer Association. Earning that credential before applying puts you ahead of candidates who have only completed the training program.
Which companies hire certified pharmacy technicians in Iowa?
Iowa certified pharmacy technician roles are posted by Hy-Vee, Walgreens, and The University of Iowa and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's mix of regional hospital systems, independent pharmacy networks, and large grocery-anchored pharmacy chains means openings appear across a wide range of employer types and settings.
Which Iowa cities have the most certified pharmacy technician jobs?
Iowa City, West Des Moines, and Boone account for the most certified pharmacy technician openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives volume through its concentration of health system campuses and corporate retail pharmacy locations, while Cedar Rapids and Davenport support demand through their regional hospital networks and high-traffic retail corridors.
Are there remote certified pharmacy technician jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. Most certified pharmacy technician work requires handling medications, operating dispensing equipment, and interacting with patients or clinical staff on site. About 0% of certified pharmacy technician openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in prior authorization review or specialty pharmacy call-center coordination rather than traditional dispensing roles.
How can I get hired as a certified pharmacy technician in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an Iowa Board of Pharmacy-approved training program at a community college such as Kirkwood Community College or Des Moines Area Community College, then applying directly to retail pharmacy chains and hospital systems that routinely hire new graduates. UnityPoint Health and MercyOne both run structured onboarding programs for pharmacy support staff. Candidates who pass the PTCB exam before their first application stand out even without work history, and cashier or medical assistant roles at pharmacy locations are common lateral moves into the technician track.
Where can I find and apply to certified pharmacy technician jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to certified pharmacy technician jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and preferred setting, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
