Certified Pharmacy Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified pharmacy technician in Texas?
To work as a pharmacy technician in Texas, you must register with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, which requires completing a board-approved training program or an equivalent combination of education and employer-sponsored training. Most Texas employers also require national certification through the PTCB or ExCPT exam. Once registered and certified, you maintain active status through continuing education hours tracked by the Board.
How much do certified pharmacy technicians make in Texas?
Certified pharmacy technicians in Texas earn a median of about $45,900 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $35,920 for the lowest 10% to over $59,260 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire certified pharmacy technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring certified pharmacy technicians in Texas right now include Walgreens, Walmart, and Costco Wholesale, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large retail pharmacy footprint and major hospital systems create steady openings across both chain and independent pharmacy settings statewide.
Which Texas cities have the most certified pharmacy technician jobs?
Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas have the most certified pharmacy technician openings in Texas. Houston's concentration of major hospital systems and medical center campuses drives volume there, while the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex supports both large retail pharmacy chains and corporate pharmacy operations, and San Antonio's military medical facilities and growing health system presence add consistent demand.
Are there remote certified pharmacy technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Most certified pharmacy technician work requires handling medications, operating dispensing equipment, and interacting with patients or clinical staff on-site, which limits remote options significantly. About 0% of certified pharmacy technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are concentrated in mail-order pharmacy operations and specialty pharmacy call-center or prior authorization support roles.
How can I get hired as a certified pharmacy technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to retail chain pharmacy technician trainee positions, where employers like CVS Health and Walgreens hire candidates without prior pharmacy experience and provide on-the-job training toward Texas State Board of Pharmacy registration. Large Texas hospital systems such as HCA Houston Healthcare and UT Southwestern Medical Center also offer pharmacy technician apprenticeship and new-hire training tracks. Completing a Texas board-approved pharmacy technician training program before applying and sitting for the PTCB exam as soon as eligible gives candidates a meaningful edge over unlicensed applicants.
