Responsibilities:
JOB SUMMARY
Evaluate and conduct evidence-based treatment of individuals with pathological upper quarter (hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder girdle, cervical area or multiple joints) conditions resulting from trauma, diseases, or congenital or acquired deformity. Use specialized skills to promote goals of prevention of dysfunction, restoration of function and/or reversal of the progression of pathology in order to enhance quality of movement and daily living skills for individuals with upper quarter disease or injury. Develop and progress POC to meet the needs of the individuals served to assist in returning them to their prior level of function. The incumbent must be a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission or must successfully pass the exam and become certified within one year of attaining position. Serves as a licensed therapist, preceptor/trainer, educator and resource to actively assist in the clinical advancement of hand therapy practice. Functions as a role model in providing direct care to the therapy services patient population. The staff member must develop and maintain a good rapport and working relationship with physicians in the community specializing in upper extremity medical care. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to each individual patient following determination of dysfunction and musculoskeletal status. They must have the skills to evaluate and treat an upper extremity patient seeking care for repetitive strain, traumatic injury, neurological dysfunctions and post-surgical rehabilitation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Implements an individualized, evidence based treatment plan through the use of specialized therapy techniques for individuals with upper quadrant injuries and disease. Treatment interventions address edema/vascularity, pain, and scar, range of motion/flexibility, wounds, strength, dexterity, sensation, function, endurance and posture/movement. Provides verbal and written instructions to patients, caregivers, and family members as needed.

Evaluates patients under the direct referral of a physician, dentist or allowed non-physician practitioner, and establishes an appropriate plan of treatment with obtainable, functional goals. Functions as a specialist in the evaluation and establishment of appropriate plan of care for individuals with upper quarter disease or injury.

Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department, including evaluations, daily treatment notes, updated individualized treatment plans, progress reports, discharge summaries, and daily patient charges.

Communicates in a concise, tactful manner with physicians, co-workers, caregivers, family members, patients, and other healthcare providers. Confers with the physician to clarify treatment plan and discuss patient status when indicated. Attends patient/physician visits as appropriate.

Delegates appropriate acts, tasks, or procedures to support staff, and supervises the care delivered by the assistive personnel.

Serves as an educator/liaison regarding hand therapy practice. Establishes strong working relationship with key physicians for the purpose of soliciting feedback regarding clinical practice performance. Provides educational in-services locally, regionally, and nationally on the topic of hand therapy rehabilitation. Participates in departmental and interdepartmental in-services and utilization review programs, and maintains a current knowledge of hand therapy techniques, through continuing education courses, professional journals, etc., as well as JCAHO, CARF, and Medicare requirements.

Serves as student educator regarding the hand program. Provides clinical experience for hand therapy students.
Education
Bachelors in Occupational or physical therapy from an accredited university, approved by the APTA or AOTA. Required

3 years in direct patient care in outpatient orthopedics Required
5 years in outpatient orthopedics Preferred
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS

Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification, Required

Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) - Certification, Certified Hand Therapy from the Hand Therapy Certification Commission. Required

Occupational Therapist (OTL) - License, or Rehab/PTA – Physical Therapy - Current certificate issued by the AZ State Board of Occupational and/or Physical Therapy that is in good standing, prior to starting employment Required
