Certified Respiratory Therapist Jobs in Louisiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified respiratory therapist in Louisiana?
To work as a certified respiratory therapist in Louisiana, you must hold an active license issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, which requires completing an accredited respiratory care program and passing the National Board for Respiratory Care's Certified Respiratory Therapist exam. Most Louisiana employers require at least an associate degree in respiratory therapy from an accredited program. Many candidates pursue the Registered Respiratory Therapist credential to remain competitive in the state's hospital market.
How much do certified respiratory therapists make in Louisiana?
Certified respiratory therapists in Louisiana earn a median of about $75,240 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,520 for the lowest 10% to over $91,200 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire certified respiratory therapists in Louisiana?
Employers hiring certified respiratory therapists in Louisiana right now include FMOL Health, CHRISTUS Health, and American Traveler, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Louisiana's large integrated health systems and regional medical centers generate the most consistent volume of certified respiratory therapist openings across the state.
Which Louisiana cities have the most certified respiratory therapist jobs?
Lafayette, New Orleans, and Lake Charles are the Louisiana cities with the most certified respiratory therapist openings. New Orleans drives the largest share of demand through its concentration of academic medical centers and trauma hospitals, while Baton Rouge and Shreveport are anchored by major regional health systems like Our Lady of the Lake and Willis-Knighton that maintain large respiratory care departments.
Are there remote certified respiratory therapist jobs in Louisiana?
Yes, but they are rare. Certified respiratory therapy is a hands-on clinical role that requires direct patient care, so the vast majority of positions are on-site. About 0% of certified respiratory therapist openings tied to Louisiana are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those roles are almost exclusively in telehealth respiratory monitoring or pulmonary case management rather than direct patient treatment.
How can I get hired as a certified respiratory therapist in Louisiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate respiratory therapist positions at large Louisiana hospital systems like Ochsner Health or Our Lady of the Lake, both of which onboard recent graduates and provide structured clinical orientation. Completing a Louisiana-accredited respiratory therapy program and passing the CRT exam before applying strengthens your candidacy significantly. Candidates coming from roles such as patient care technician or respiratory therapy aide often find it easier to move into full therapist positions at facilities where they already have a relationship with the department.
