Certified Respiratory Therapist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a certified respiratory therapist in Texas?
You become a certified respiratory therapist in Texas by completing a respiratory therapy program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, then passing the Certified Respiratory Therapist exam administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Texas requires state licensure through the Texas Medical Board before you can practice, so after passing your NBRC exam you apply to the TMB for your license. Most Texas employers require both the NBRC credential and an active Texas license before your first day.
How much do certified respiratory therapists make in Texas?
Certified respiratory therapists in Texas earn a median of about $79,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,310 for the lowest 10% to over $99,690 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire certified respiratory therapists in Texas?
Employers hiring certified respiratory therapists in Texas right now include CHRISTUS Health, Medical City Healthcare, and Heart Hospital of Austin, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of October 2026. Texas's high concentration of large regional hospital systems and nationally recognized academic medical centers means steady, year-round demand across inpatient, outpatient, and specialty care settings.
Which Texas cities have the most certified respiratory therapist jobs?
Austin, Fort Worth, and El Paso lead Texas for certified respiratory therapist openings. Houston's size and its concentration of major hospital systems and Level I trauma centers drive the highest overall volume, while Dallas-Fort Worth's sprawling suburban medical campuses and San Antonio's military treatment facilities and large nonprofit health systems account for strong demand outside the state's largest city.
Are there remote certified respiratory therapist jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Respiratory therapy is a hands-on clinical role requiring direct patient contact, so most positions are fully on-site. About 0% of certified respiratory therapist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of October 2026, and those roles are almost exclusively in telehealth monitoring, respiratory therapy education, or clinical training coordination rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a certified respiratory therapist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate or graduate transition programs at large Texas health systems such as Houston Methodist, Baylor Scott & White, or UT Health, which periodically run structured onboarding cohorts specifically for newly credentialed therapists. Targeting general medical-surgical or step-down units before seeking ICU or neonatal placements is a practical strategy, since those floors hire more broadly and develop foundational skills. Having your Texas Medical Board license active and your BLS current before you apply removes the most common screening barrier for candidates without prior clinical employment.
Where can I find and apply to certified respiratory therapist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to certified respiratory therapist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across hospital systems, specialty clinics, and long-term care facilities. Find the roles that fit your credentials and experience, then apply directly through the listings.
