Civil Engineer Jobs in Los Angeles: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil engineer job in Los Angeles?
Focus on the sectors driving the most local hiring: public infrastructure, transportation, and land development. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, metro rail expansion projects, and large engineering and construction firms concentrated in Downtown LA and the San Fernando Valley are your strongest targets. Candidates with experience in stormwater management, traffic engineering, or seismic design stand out in this market.
Which companies hire civil engineers in Los Angeles?
Employers hiring civil engineers in Los Angeles right now include Psomas, Kimley-Horn, and BKF Engineers, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Los Angeles draws a wide mix of large engineering and construction firms, county and municipal agencies, and infrastructure consultancies with offices across the region.
Are there remote civil engineer jobs in Los Angeles?
Yes, though remote work is limited for civil engineers since most roles involve site visits, field inspections, or hands-on project coordination. About 66% of civil engineer openings tied to Los Angeles are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those tend to be design, drafting, or project management roles where CAD work and client communication can happen off-site.
How can I get a civil engineer job in Los Angeles with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Los Angeles is through internships or entry-level positions with county agencies like the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works or with mid-size engineering consultancies that routinely hire new graduates as junior engineers or engineering assistants. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and California-specific grading and drainage standards gives entry-level candidates a concrete edge over equally credentialed applicants.
