Industrial Design Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a industrial design engineer in California?
The concrete path starts with a bachelor's degree in industrial design, product design, or mechanical engineering from an accredited program. California does not require a state-issued license specifically for industrial design engineers, so most employers hire based on degree, portfolio, and demonstrated CAD skill. Building a portfolio of physical prototypes, consumer products, or medical device concepts through internships, capstone projects, or contract work at California design studios is the most reliable way to qualify for full-time roles.
How much do industrial design engineers make in California?
Industrial design engineers in California earn a median of about $124,600 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,900 for the lowest 10% to over $172,870 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire industrial design engineers in California?
Employers hiring industrial design engineers in California right now include Apple, NVIDIA, and Astera Labs, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of consumer electronics, medical device, and automotive design studios means industrial design engineers will find a broader range of product categories here than in almost any other state.
Which California cities have the most industrial design engineer jobs?
San Jose, Cupertino, and Santa Clara have the most industrial design engineer openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its density of consumer electronics and tech hardware companies, Los Angeles draws from entertainment product design, apparel, and automotive studios, and San Diego's medical device and defense sectors account for a consistent share of the postings that appear in smaller or suburban parts of the state.
Are there remote industrial design engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Industrial design engineering involves hands-on prototyping, materials testing, and in-person collaboration with manufacturing and user-research teams, which makes full remote work uncommon. About 10% of industrial design engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate on the early conceptual and CAD modeling phases rather than physical development work.
How can I get hired as a industrial design engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a product design internship or new-graduate associate role at a California consumer electronics or medical device company, where structured programs exist specifically for candidates without professional experience. Large Bay Area hardware companies and San Diego medical device firms regularly bring on associate industrial designers and junior product engineers through campus recruiting. A strong portfolio showing physical prototypes, CAD models, or capstone products, combined with a degree from a California design school or UC engineering program, is what moves candidates forward when work history is limited.
Where can I find and apply to industrial design engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to industrial design engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries including consumer electronics, medical devices, and automotive design. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly from each listing.
