Tips for Your Civil Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to project delivery
Hiring managers scan for project type, scale, and your specific role on each job. List the dollar value of projects you contributed to, the delivery method used, and whether you held a lead or support role on each.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists civil engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight licensure status on page one
State whether you hold an EIT, PE, or are in progress on your PE exam in the resume header or summary. Many civil engineer roles require or strongly prefer licensure, and recruiters filter by it before reading further.
Match your specialization to the posting
Civil engineer job descriptions are written around a discipline: structural, transportation, water, or geotechnical. Use the same discipline terminology the posting uses, not a generic title, so your application clears automated screening.
Prepare technical case examples for interviews
Civil engineer interviews routinely include scenario questions on design decisions, code compliance, or schedule conflicts. Prepare two or three project examples where you can walk through your technical reasoning and the outcome in detail.
Negotiate scope before you accept an offer
Before signing, clarify whether the role involves field work, office-based design, or both, and confirm the software stack you will use day to day. Misalignment on these two points is the most common source of early dissatisfaction in civil engineering roles.
Civil Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most civil engineers?
The companies hiring the most civil engineers right now include HDR, Terracon Consultants, and Kimley-Horn, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Municipal governments, state DOTs, and large engineering and construction firms consistently account for the bulk of civil engineer hiring nationwide.
How many civil engineer jobs are remote?
About 18% of civil engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than in most professional fields because site visits and field coordination are core to many roles. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements are plan review, traffic modeling, hydraulic analysis, and structural design work that does not require regular field presence.
How do you become a civil engineer?
You become a civil engineer by earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program, then passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to earn your EIT credential. After gaining qualifying work experience under a licensed PE, you sit for the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam to earn your PE license, which most employers require for project leadership roles.
Can you get hired as a civil engineer with little experience?
Yes, entry-level civil engineer roles regularly go to recent graduates who can demonstrate internship experience, strong CAD skills, and familiarity with a relevant software package like Civil 3D or HEC-RAS. Municipal agencies and mid-size consulting firms tend to be the most willing to train new graduates, especially candidates who already hold their EIT and show project exposure through coursework or co-ops.
What does the civil engineer interview process look like?
Most civil engineer interviews include a phone screen with HR, a technical interview with a senior engineer covering design concepts and software proficiency, and a final round with the project manager or department lead. Some firms add a short take-home design exercise or ask you to walk through a past project in detail to assess your technical reasoning and communication.
Where can I find and apply to civil engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to civil engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the listings to find roles that match your discipline, experience level, and location, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
