Civil Engineer Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil engineer job in Houston?
Focus your search on Houston's dominant hiring sectors: oil and gas infrastructure, municipal public works, and highway and transit projects tied to TxDOT and Harris County. Engineering and construction consultancies concentrated in the Energy Corridor and Greenway Plaza hire heavily. Candidates with experience in drainage design, roadway engineering, or industrial site development stand out in this market. Building familiarity with Houston's floodplain and stormwater standards also gives you a practical edge with local employers.
Which companies hire civil engineers in Houston?
Companies currently hiring civil engineers in Houston include Primoris Services Corporation, GHD, and Westwood Professional Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's market includes a broad mix of large engineering and construction consultancies, energy infrastructure firms, and municipal agencies overseeing the city's ongoing transportation and flood-mitigation projects.
Are there remote civil engineer jobs in Houston?
Yes, though remote work is limited for civil engineers since most roles involve field inspections, site coordination, or hands-on project management. About 13% of civil engineer openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with those options most common in project controls, hydraulic modeling, and design roles that are primarily desk-based. Fully remote positions are more frequently available in structural analysis and traffic engineering.
How can I get a civil engineer job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is landing an engineer-in-training role with one of the city's large consultancies or with Harris County Public Infrastructure. Many Houston firms actively hire recent graduates for roadway, drainage, and utility design support roles. Internship experience with TxDOT's Houston district or the City of Houston's Public Works department carries significant weight locally. EIT certification and coursework in AutoCAD Civil 3D are the practical skills Houston employers ask for most consistently at the entry level.
Which industries hire the most civil engineers in Houston?
Most civil engineer openings in Houston sit in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Houston's role as the national hub for energy infrastructure, combined with its ongoing investment in highway expansion and flood-resilience projects, drives sustained demand across those sectors throughout the year.
