Civil Engineer Jobs in Austin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil engineer job in Austin?
Target Austin's most active hiring sectors: the City of Austin's capital improvement program, TxDOT projects in the region, and private development firms building the city's rapid residential and commercial growth. Candidates with experience in stormwater management, transportation design, or utility infrastructure stand out locally. Familiarity with Austin-specific codes and Central Texas soil conditions gives applicants a concrete edge over generalist candidates.
Which companies hire civil engineers in Austin?
Employers hiring civil engineers in Austin right now include Jacobs, Consort, and Westwood Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Austin's market includes a mix of large engineering consultancies, municipal and regional government agencies, and mid-size firms specializing in land development and transportation tied to the city's ongoing infrastructure expansion.
Are there remote civil engineer jobs in Austin?
Yes, though remote availability is limited by nature since most civil engineering work involves site visits, field inspections, and coordinating on physical infrastructure. About 56% of civil engineer openings tied to Austin are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, skewing toward roles in project management, CAD-heavy design, and environmental review where desk-based output is the primary deliverable.
How can I get a civil engineer job in Austin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Austin is through engineering internship programs at the City of Austin's Public Works or Development Services departments, which regularly bring on graduates. Entry-level roles as EIT-track project engineers at local land development firms or as CAD technicians at regional consultancies also provide a practical foothold. Completing the FE exam before applying signals readiness and separates new graduates in a competitive local pool.
Which industries hire the most civil engineers in Austin?
Austin civil engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Sports & Recreation, and Staffing & Recruiting, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Austin's sustained population growth, active highway expansion programs, and a city government managing billions in capital improvement projects keep those sectors consistently among the highest-volume employers of civil engineers in the area.
