Civil Engineer Jobs in Richmond: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil engineer job in Richmond?
Focus your search on the transportation and municipal sectors, where Richmond's ongoing road, bridge, and stormwater projects generate consistent openings. Engineering and construction consultancies supporting VDOT and the City of Richmond's capital improvement program hire heavily, as do commercial developers active in the Carytown and Scott's Addition corridors. Candidates with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and local land-development permitting experience stand out in this market.
Which companies hire civil engineers in Richmond?
Companies currently hiring civil engineers in Richmond include Kimley-Horn, WSP, and Bowman, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. The local market is anchored by regional engineering consultancies, municipal contractors, and development firms tied to Richmond's active infrastructure and mixed-use redevelopment pipeline.
Are there remote civil engineer jobs in Richmond?
Yes, though with limits, civil engineering is heavily field- and site-dependent, so fully remote roles are uncommon, while hybrid arrangements for design, analysis, and project coordination work are more available. About 47% of civil engineer openings tied to Richmond are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with most flexibility found in transportation planning and hydraulic modeling roles rather than construction management or inspection positions.
How can I get a civil engineer job in Richmond with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Richmond is through regional engineering consultancies and municipal contractors that hire junior engineers or EIT-level staff to support VDOT-funded and City of Richmond infrastructure projects. Entry roles in stormwater management, site development, and transportation planning are the most accessible locally. Completing your FE exam before applying and gaining familiarity with Virginia-specific land development processes gives early-career candidates a concrete edge with Richmond-area employers.
Which industries hire the most civil engineers in Richmond?
Most civil engineer openings in Richmond sit in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Richmond's role as a regional transportation hub and its active municipal capital improvement cycle keep infrastructure consulting and public-sector contracting as the dominant sources of local demand.
