Civil Engineer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil engineer job in Chicago?
Target Chicago's largest hiring sectors: municipal infrastructure through the Chicago Department of Transportation, transit expansion under the CTA and Metra, and private development concentrated in the Loop and Near North Side. Candidates with experience in urban stormwater management, structural design for high-density sites, or transportation planning have a clear edge. Networking through the Illinois Section ASCE chapter and attending local project bid meetings also opens doors faster than applying cold.
Which companies hire civil engineers in Chicago?
Employers hiring civil engineers in Chicago right now include Quanta Services, Stantec, and Burns & McDonnell, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's market mixes large infrastructure consultancies with city and county agencies, transit authorities, and real estate developers driving mixed-use construction across the lakefront and Fulton Market corridors.
Are there remote civil engineer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though civil engineering is largely site-dependent, so fully remote roles are limited to analytical, design, or project management functions. About 19% of civil engineer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with most flexibility found in roles focused on CAD drafting, environmental compliance review, or grant-funded planning work rather than field inspection or construction oversight.
How can I get a civil engineer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is pursuing an EIT-designated role with a city agency or a large regional consultancy that runs structured graduate programs. Chicago's municipal departments, including Public Works and the Department of Water Management, regularly hire junior engineers for infrastructure maintenance projects. Entry-level candidates gain an edge by highlighting coursework in urban hydrology or structural analysis, and by pursuing internships with firms active on Chicago Transit Authority or Illinois DOT contracts.
Which industries hire the most civil engineers in Chicago?
The sectors hiring the most civil engineers in Chicago are Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Technology & Software, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's role as a regional transit hub and its ongoing lakefront and neighborhood infrastructure investment programs make government agencies, transit authorities, and large engineering consultancies the most consistent sources of civil engineering demand in the metro area.
