Engineering Manager Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a engineering manager in Illinois?
Most engineering manager roles in Illinois require a bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline, followed by several years of hands-on engineering work before moving into management. While Illinois does not require a specific management license for the role, engineers who oversee public works or sign off on engineering documents may need a Professional Engineer license issued through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Strong technical credentials combined with leadership experience are the most common path to qualifying.
Which companies hire engineering managers in Illinois?
Employers hiring engineering managers in Illinois right now include CVS Health, Northrop Grumman, and PwC, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Illinois's dense concentration of manufacturers, technology firms, and healthcare companies means demand is distributed across both the Chicago metro and downstate industrial corridors.
Which Illinois cities have the most engineering manager jobs?
Chicago, Schaumburg, and Illinois have the most engineering manager openings in Illinois. Chicago and its suburbs drive the majority of postings through a combination of corporate headquarters, technology companies, and major healthcare systems, while Peoria and Rockford reflect the strong industrial and heavy manufacturing base that makes downstate Illinois a consistent source of engineering leadership roles.
Are there remote engineering manager jobs in Illinois?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely software-focused fields, since engineering managers in Illinois often oversee manufacturing floors, lab environments, or infrastructure projects that require on-site presence. About 52% of engineering manager openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with remote work most prevalent in software engineering management and technical program management roles at technology and SaaS companies headquartered in the Chicago area.
How can I get hired as a engineering manager in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a team lead or senior engineer role first, then stepping into management once you have demonstrated ownership of a project or a small team. Large Illinois employers like Caterpillar and Abbott run structured rotational and leadership development programs that place high-performing engineers on a management track. Pursuing a Professional Engineer license through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation or earning a PMP credential strengthens a candidate's case for an early management opportunity significantly.
Where can I find and apply to engineering manager jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to engineering manager jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and preferred location, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
