Civil Engineer Jobs in Philadelphia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil engineer job in Philadelphia?
Focus on employers tied to Philadelphia's active infrastructure priorities: SEPTA expansion, PennDOT regional projects, the Philadelphia Water Department, and private engineering consultancies serving municipal contracts. Candidates with experience in stormwater management, structural inspection, or transportation planning have a clear edge here. Networking through the Delaware Valley Engineers Week or ASCE Philadelphia Chapter events also puts you in front of local project managers who hire regularly.
Which companies hire civil engineers in Philadelphia?
Companies currently hiring civil engineers in Philadelphia include Bohler, Pennoni, and Urban Engineers, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Philadelphia's market includes a strong mix of large engineering consultancies, city and regional transit agencies, and municipal utilities that maintain consistent civil engineering headcount.
Are there remote civil engineer jobs in Philadelphia?
Yes, but only selectively, since most civil engineering work involves site visits, inspections, and field coordination that require physical presence. About 60% of civil engineer openings tied to Philadelphia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the growing share of desk-based roles. Planning, CAD drafting, environmental review, and project management tasks are the functions most commonly offered on a hybrid schedule by Philadelphia-area employers.
How can I get a civil engineer job in Philadelphia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Philadelphia is landing an EIT-track role with a municipal agency or mid-size consultancy. The Philadelphia Water Department, Philadelphia Streets Department, and regional engineering firms regularly hire junior engineers and project assistants for infrastructure and stormwater work. Completing your EIT exam and targeting roles labeled 'staff engineer' or 'design engineer I' gives you a foothold, and co-op experience from Drexel or Temple carries real weight with local hiring managers.
Which industries hire the most civil engineers in Philadelphia?
Philadelphia civil engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services and Construction & Real Estate, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Philadelphia's aging infrastructure, active transit investment through SEPTA, and ongoing waterfront and neighborhood redevelopment projects sustain consistent demand across those sectors year-round.
