Mechanical Design Engineer
Alpine Metal Tech North America Inc, one of the world’s leading industrial groups in the aerospace, metals, automotive and safety industries, is seeking to fill the position of a Mechanical CAD Designer for our Simulation, Gega, Numtec and Magnemag brands at its Pittsburgh location. Simulation is widely recognized as the world’s leading designer, manufacturer, and producer of live fire training simulators for the public safety sector, particularly for airports and the military. Gega, Numtec and Magnemag are widely recognized as the world’s leading designer, manufacturer, and producer of steel mill machinery.
Job Brief
This self-motivating, minimally supervised position works with other engineers and project managers in:
1. Design and construction specification of firefighting simulators that replicate actual aircraft, vehicles, and buildings in dimension and layout. These gas-fueled, steel constructed simulators, are custom built and adapted and modified per customer specifications that originate from past projects and existing designs. Besides design modifications, coordination/oversight with manufacturing of the simulator and advising civil engineering of specifications needs to be performed, as well as support for project management during the installation phase.
2. Design and manufacture of heavy steel mill machinery. This machinery is part of the production lines of steel plants across North America. Machine types include torch-cutting, deburring, marking.

Roles/Responsibilities
Include but are not limited to:
- Design products using AutoCAD Inventor, and consult with engineering and manufacturing teammates in the US and Europe to ensure that designs are feasible
- Update / revision of legacy 2D CAD drawings
- Ensure compliance with any codes, regulations, and bid/project requirements
- Consult with fabrication teams during product manufacturing, advising them on design specifications and providing assistance when required
- Coordinate with subcontractors, including the civil portion, to ensure their scope of work meets our needed specifications
- Review customer bid documents and work with sales/engineers/project personnel/manufacturers to help establish quotations for products
- Research competitor products quarterly and collaborate with product development team to generate ideas for making our products the best ones on the market
- Calculate cost estimates for final product designs, and release reports to supervisors, incorporating costs of labor, material, delivery and overhead
- Attend meetings, including some on customer sites, to provide progress reports, answer questions, support sub suppliers, etc.
- Work closely and support Project Managers during installation and commissioning phases which include occasional site visits
- Create RFQ’s and purchasing of manufactured and bought-out items.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Product Design and Development in the area of steel structures and electro/mechanical systems.
- Proficient in AutoCAD Inventor
- Proficient in MS-Office, including Word and Excel
- Ability to thrive in a cross functional and cross-cultural work environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Excellent self-motivation
- Ability to travel. Occasional travel will be required.
