Civil Engineer Jobs in Pittsburgh: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil engineer job in Pittsburgh?
Focus your search on Pittsburgh's infrastructure and construction sectors, which drive consistent local demand across transportation, stormwater, and structural work. Municipal and county agencies, regional engineering consultancies, and firms supporting the Port Authority and PennDOT are among the steadiest hirers. Candidates with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or stormwater management experience stand out. Targeting firms active on downtown redevelopment and the city's ongoing bridge rehabilitation projects gives you a practical edge.
Which companies hire civil engineers in Pittsburgh?
Companies currently hiring civil engineers in Pittsburgh include Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, George L Wilson & Co., and GHD, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pittsburgh's mix of established engineering consultancies, municipal contractors, and energy-sector firms creates demand across a wide range of civil specialties.
Are there remote civil engineer jobs in Pittsburgh?
Yes, though remote availability is limited for most civil engineer roles since site visits, inspections, and field coordination are core to the work. About 43% of civil engineer openings tied to Pittsburgh are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, skewing toward desk-based roles. Planning, permitting review, CAD drafting, and report writing are the functions most likely to support hybrid or remote arrangements with Pittsburgh-based firms.
How can I get a civil engineer job in Pittsburgh with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Pittsburgh is through municipal internship programs with the City of Pittsburgh or Allegheny County, which regularly bring on junior engineers for infrastructure and stormwater projects. Regional consulting firms also hire EIT-track candidates for support roles on transportation and site development work. Completing your FE exam and targeting project engineer assistant or CAD technician roles at firms active on PennDOT contracts gives you a strong local foothold.
Which industries hire the most civil engineers in Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh civil engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services and Investment & Asset Management, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pittsburgh's legacy of infrastructure investment, ongoing bridge and road rehabilitation, and growing environmental remediation activity in former industrial corridors keep demand for civil engineers steady across these sectors.
