Tips for Your QA Test Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to the testing stack
Recruiters scan for specific tools, so list the frameworks you've actually used, Selenium, Cypress, Appium, or Playwright, prominently under each role. Burying them in a skills section at the bottom means automated screeners may miss them entirely.
Quantify defects found, not just tests written
Hiring managers want outcomes. Replace phrases like 'wrote automated tests' with specific results: regression cycle time reduced, critical bugs caught before release, or test coverage percentage increased. Numbers tied to business impact consistently outperform generic descriptions.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists qa test engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter for roles matching your testing type
Manual and automation qa test engineer roles require different skill sets and attract different interviewers. When searching, use terms like 'SDET,' 'automation engineer,' or 'manual QA' to surface openings that genuinely match your background rather than generic quality assurance postings.
Prepare a live demo for your automation portfolio
Many qa test engineer interviews now include a take-home or live coding exercise. Having a public repository with a working test suite, clear README, and commented assertions lets you walk interviewers through real code instead of describing past work from memory.
Negotiate scope before you negotiate salary
Ask whether the role covers frontend, backend, API, or mobile testing before discussing compensation. The breadth of what you're expected to own directly affects the seniority level you can justify and the total package you should be targeting.
QA Test Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most qa test engineers?
The companies hiring the most qa test engineers right now include Apple, PlayStation, and Jabil, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Michigan, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially concentrated in companies scaling their engineering teams or undergoing major platform migrations.
How many qa test engineer jobs are remote?
About 14% of qa test engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more remote-accessible engineering roles. Automation-focused positions and those tied to software-only products tend to offer the highest share of fully remote arrangements, while hardware-adjacent or on-site lab testing roles typically require in-person presence.
How do you become a qa test engineer?
Most qa test engineers start with a degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, then build hands-on skills in manual testing before moving into automation. Learning a scripting language like Python or JavaScript, getting comfortable with a framework like Selenium or Cypress, earning an ISTQB Foundation certification, and contributing to open-source test projects or internships are the most reliable steps toward your first role.
How do you get hired as a qa test engineer with little experience?
Focus on building a public test portfolio before you apply. Write automated test suites for open-source projects or build a small app solely to test it, then host the code publicly. Entry-level postings often list the same tools as senior roles, so demonstrating working knowledge of one automation framework and one API testing tool, even through personal projects, addresses the gap more effectively than certifications alone.
What does the qa test engineer interview process look like?
Most qa test engineer interviews run in three to four stages. An initial recruiter screen covers your background and tool experience, followed by a technical screen where you may be asked to review a bug report or write test cases on the spot. Later rounds typically include a live coding or automation exercise, often in the company's actual stack, and a final interview with engineering leads covering testing strategy, communication, and how you handle competing priorities under release pressure.
Where can I find and apply to qa test engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to qa test engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, preferred testing type, and location preferences, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
