Tips for Your Traffic Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume for each project type
Traffic engineering roles vary by specialty, so a resume strong on signal timing and operations won't land a transportation planning role without adjustment. Highlight the tools, software, and project types that directly match each posting's stated focus.
List software proficiencies prominently
Hiring managers scan for tools first. Call out Synchro, HCS, SimTraffic, AutoCAD, and any microsimulation software you've used in a dedicated skills section, not buried in bullet points under old jobs where the context is easy to miss.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists traffic engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by project delivery method
Public agency roles and private consultant roles call for different experience. Agency postings prioritize permit review and traffic impact studies, while consultant roles weight billable project delivery. Read the scope of work carefully and frame your experience to match.
Prepare to walk through a real traffic study
Interviewers for traffic engineer roles frequently ask you to explain methodology behind a count, intersection analysis, or signal warrant study you completed. Choose one strong example from your portfolio and practice explaining the problem, your approach, and your findings out loud.
Negotiate using total compensation, not salary alone
Public-sector traffic engineer offers often include defined-benefit pensions, flexible schedules, and generous leave that private consulting firms don't match. Price the full package, including overtime policy and professional development reimbursement, before comparing offers side by side.
Traffic Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most traffic engineers?
The companies hiring the most traffic engineers right now include Volkert, WSP, and HDR, with the largest share of openings in Florida, California, and North Carolina, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Municipal departments of transportation and regional planning agencies consistently account for a substantial share of total openings.
How many traffic engineer jobs are remote?
About 19% of traffic engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the field's historically in-person and site-dependent nature. Sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements include transportation planning, traffic modeling, and data analysis roles, where field presence is less frequently required.
How do you become a traffic engineer?
Start by earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering with coursework in transportation engineering, traffic flow theory, and geometric design. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to become an Engineer in Training, then accumulate supervised experience under a licensed professional engineer. After meeting your state's experience threshold, pass the PE exam and pursue transportation-focused projects to build a portfolio in signal design, traffic studies, or planning.
Can you get hired as a traffic engineer with little experience?
Yes, entry-level traffic engineer roles exist at consulting firms and public agencies for candidates who have completed relevant coursework and internships. Employers at this level look for EIT certification, exposure to traffic analysis software through coursework or internships, and demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering plans. A strong senior or graduate project involving a traffic study or transportation analysis strengthens an entry-level application meaningfully.
What does the traffic engineer interview process look like?
Most traffic engineer interviews start with a phone or video screen covering your background, software experience, and availability. A technical interview follows, where you may be asked to walk through a past traffic study, interpret a signal timing plan, or discuss methodology for a warrant analysis. Final rounds at public agencies often include a panel interview with multiple department staff, while consulting firms may ask you to present a work sample or complete a short written exercise.
Where can I find and apply to traffic engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to traffic engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and specialization, and apply directly to each one that fits.
