Senior Level Traffic Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a senior level traffic engineer job?
Employers at this level look for candidates who have led signal timing projects, traffic impact studies, or corridor analyses from scoping through final deliverable. Strong candidates demonstrate ownership of technical decisions, familiarity with Highway Capacity Manual methods, and experience mentoring junior staff. Professional Engineer licensure is expected by most hiring teams, and a portfolio of completed studies or design projects carries significant weight.
Which companies hire senior level traffic engineers?
Companies hiring senior level traffic engineers right now include WSP, Volkert, and HDR, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level comes primarily from multidisciplinary engineering consultancies, transportation planning firms, and public agencies managing large infrastructure programs.
Are there remote senior level traffic engineer jobs?
Yes, though full remote is less common in this field than in purely office-based disciplines. About 14% of senior level traffic engineer openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting roles where modeling, reporting, and client coordination can happen off-site while field reviews remain in person. Hybrid arrangements are most available at national consultancies with distributed project teams.
What makes a traffic engineer role senior level?
Senior level traffic engineer roles are defined by independent technical ownership rather than execution under close supervision. Responsibilities typically include setting the methodology for complex studies, reviewing and signing off on junior engineers' work, managing client relationships, and contributing to scope and fee development. The expectation is that you drive the outcome of a project, not just complete assigned tasks within it.
Which industries hire the most senior level traffic engineers?
Senior Level traffic engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Technology & Software, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors generate sustained demand at the senior level because large-scale development, infrastructure investment, and public-private partnerships all require experienced engineers who can navigate regulatory review and lead technical teams through delivery.
