A strong step early in your career is passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and registering as an Engineer-in-Training with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Firms in Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Austin routinely hire interns through university co-op programs and direct applications, with transportation and site development experience giving candidates a clear advantage.

Which companies hire civil engineering interns in Texas?
Employers hiring civil engineering interns in Texas right now include Braun Intertec, Intertek, and Arcadis, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's scale of infrastructure investment and ongoing growth in its major metros keeps intern demand steady at both large engineering consultancies and regional municipal engineering firms.
Which Texas cities have the most civil engineering intern jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Dallas have the most civil engineering intern openings in Texas. Houston's volume is driven by major transportation corridor projects and energy-sector infrastructure, while Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin generate demand through rapid land development, regional highway expansion, and the large engineering consultancies headquartered or regionally based in those metros.
Are there remote civil engineering intern jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Civil engineering intern work is fundamentally hands-on, involving field visits, site assessments, and in-office drafting collaboration, so most positions require physical presence. About 8% of civil engineering intern openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be limited to plan review, data analysis, or report writing components of otherwise in-person roles.
How can I get hired as a civil engineering intern in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly through university co-op and intern programs at Texas-based firms like Freese and Nichols, Kimley-Horn, and Jacobs, all of which run structured intern cohorts designed for students without prior professional experience. Completing your FE exam and registering as an Engineer-in-Training with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors signals readiness even before graduation.
