Civil Project Engineer Jobs in Richmond: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil project engineer job in Richmond?
Target the infrastructure and land development sectors that drive Richmond's market: VDOT-contracted firms, municipal utilities, and private developers active in the city's ongoing corridor and transit projects. Candidates with experience in stormwater management, site development, or roadway design for Virginia's mixed urban-suburban environments stand out. Showing familiarity with Richmond's specific regulatory environment and active project areas, such as the Pulse BRT corridor or Southside redevelopment zones, gives a clear edge over generalist applicants.
Which companies hire civil project engineers in Richmond?
Companies currently hiring civil project engineers in Richmond include SHIRLEY CONTRACTING COMPANY, Bohler, and Bowman, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Richmond's hiring base is a mix of regional engineering consultancies, large infrastructure primes with local offices, and municipal agencies managing the city's expanding utility and transportation capital programs.
Are there remote civil project engineer jobs in Richmond?
Yes, though options are limited: civil project engineering is largely a field-based and site-dependent role, making fully remote positions rare compared to purely analytical disciplines. About 0% of civil project engineer openings tied to Richmond are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with most flexibility concentrated in the design, plan review, and project coordination phases rather than construction observation or site inspection work.
How can I get a civil project engineer job in Richmond with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Richmond is through a junior or project engineer role at a regional consulting firm supporting VDOT or Henrico and Chesterfield County infrastructure projects, where mentorship structures are common. Municipal agencies like Richmond Public Works and local utility authorities also hire entry-level engineers for capital improvement programs. A co-op or internship with a Richmond-area firm, combined with EIT certification, puts a new graduate in a strong position for full-time conversion.
Which industries hire the most civil project engineers in Richmond?
Most civil project engineer openings in Richmond sit in Construction & Real Estate and Consulting & Professional Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Richmond's role as Virginia's capital, combined with active investment in regional transit, utility modernization, and private mixed-use development, keeps these sectors consistently at the top of local hiring activity for civil engineering talent.
