Civil Project Engineer Jobs in Seattle: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil project engineer job in Seattle?
Focus on Seattle's dominant hiring sectors: the Seattle Department of Transportation, King County, Sound Transit, and the Port of Seattle drive consistent public-sector demand, while private engineering consultancies tied to light rail expansion and stormwater infrastructure projects hire heavily. Candidates with experience in WSDOT standards, SWPPP compliance, or urban transit design stand out locally. Connecting with firms supporting the I-5 corridor and Sound Transit's ST3 program is a practical starting point.
Which companies hire civil project engineers in Seattle?
Companies currently hiring civil project engineers in Seattle include Skanska, Gary Merlino Construction, and WSP, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Seattle's hiring mix skews toward regional engineering consultancies, public agencies, and contractors tied to the city's ongoing transit and waterfront capital programs.
Are there remote civil project engineer jobs in Seattle?
Yes, though civil project engineering is largely site-dependent, so fully remote roles are uncommon. About 57% of civil project engineer openings tied to Seattle are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, reflecting hybrid arrangements where office-based design and reporting work is done remotely. Project management, AutoCAD drafting, and environmental documentation phases tend to offer the most flexibility for Seattle-based teams.
How can I get a civil project engineer job in Seattle with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Seattle is through internships or junior engineering roles with King County, the City of Seattle's Office of City Engineer, or mid-size consultancies supporting Sound Transit contracts. Entry-level positions such as project engineer I, assistant resident engineer, or CAD technician open doors locally. A Washington EIT certification and familiarity with stormwater management or SEPA documentation gives early-career candidates a measurable edge over applicants without local regulatory exposure.
Which industries hire the most civil project engineers in Seattle?
Seattle civil project engineer roles concentrate in Consulting & Professional Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. Seattle's sustained investment in light rail expansion, combined with aging waterfront infrastructure and new mixed-use development along corridors like Roosevelt and Rainier Avenue, keeps multi-sector demand high for civil engineering talent across both public agencies and private contractors.
