Mechanical Design Engineer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mechanical design engineer in Washington?
Most mechanical design engineer roles in Washington require a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field. Washington does not require a state-issued license for most industry engineering positions, though engineers who stamp public-facing documents must be licensed through the Washington State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Many Washington employers, particularly in aerospace and defense, expect proficiency in CAD tools and familiarity with industry standards before hiring.
How much do mechanical design engineers make in Washington?
Mechanical design engineers in Washington earn a median of about $110,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,400 for the lowest 10% to over $167,680 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire mechanical design engineers in Washington?
Employers hiring mechanical design engineers in Washington right now include Amazon, Meta, and PACCAR, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Washington's aerospace and defense sector, anchored in the greater Seattle and Everett area, consistently produces some of the highest mechanical design engineer hiring volume of any state.
Which Washington cities have the most mechanical design engineer jobs?
Seattle, Redmond, and Kirkland have the most mechanical design engineer openings in Washington. Seattle and Everett lead due to the concentration of aerospace and advanced manufacturing employers along the Puget Sound, while Redmond and Bellevue draw significant hiring from defense electronics and technology-adjacent engineering firms with mechanical hardware development needs.
Are there remote mechanical design engineer jobs in Washington?
Yes, but they're rare. Mechanical design engineering is a hands-on discipline that typically requires access to labs, prototypes, and manufacturing floors, so most roles are on-site or hybrid at best. About 0% of mechanical design engineer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. The portions of the role most amenable to remote work include CAD modeling, design reviews, and documentation tasks that don't require physical presence.
How can I get hired as a mechanical design engineer in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or co-op while completing an engineering degree, as Boeing, Blue Origin, and Paccar all run structured programs that regularly convert participants to full-time roles. New graduates can also target associate mechanical engineer or design technician postings, which serve as direct stepping stones into full design roles. Building a portfolio of CAD projects and pursuing the Engineer-in-Training designation through the Washington State Board of Registration strengthens applications considerably for candidates without commercial experience.
