Clinical Pathologist Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical pathologist in Maryland?
To become a clinical pathologist in Maryland, you must complete medical school, finish an ACGME-accredited pathology residency, and obtain an active medical license through the Maryland Board of Physicians. Board certification from the American Board of Pathology is required by most Maryland employers. Many positions at academic centers like Johns Hopkins or the University of Maryland also expect fellowship training in a subspecialty before hire.
How much do clinical pathologists make in Maryland?
Clinical pathologists in Maryland earn a median of about $253,670 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $125,560 for the lowest 10% to over $396,980 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire clinical pathologists in Maryland?
Companies currently hiring clinical pathologists in Maryland include Pediatric Developmental Services, Adventist HealthCare, and Speech Kids NY, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maryland's concentration of academic medical systems and federally affiliated research institutions means clinical pathologist openings appear across a broader range of employer types than in most other states.
Which Maryland cities have the most clinical pathologist jobs?
The cities with the most clinical pathologist openings in Maryland are Baltimore, Silver Spring, and Maryland. Baltimore anchors the market through its dense cluster of academic medical centers and independent reference labs, while Bethesda and the DC-adjacent suburbs draw demand from NIH-affiliated institutions, federal health agencies, and large integrated health systems operating in the region.
Are there remote clinical pathologist jobs in Maryland?
Yes, but they're limited. Clinical pathology is fundamentally a hands-on discipline requiring microscopy, specimen handling, and on-site laboratory oversight, so fully remote roles are uncommon. About 25% of clinical pathologist openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions typically involve digital pathology consultation, telepathology reads, or medical directorship functions that can be performed off-site.
How can I get hired as a clinical pathologist in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is securing a residency position at one of Maryland's training programs, including those at Johns Hopkins Hospital or the University of Maryland Medical Center, which accept candidates directly from medical school. New physicians without post-residency experience often move into first attending roles through fellowship-to-staff pipelines at these same institutions. Building a strong case presentation portfolio and obtaining early board certification candidacy gives applicants a clear edge in Maryland's competitive academic market.
Where can I find and apply to clinical pathologist jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to clinical pathologist jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from Maryland employers. Search the listings to find roles that match your training and subspecialty, then apply directly to the positions that fit.
