Tips for Your Clinical Research Internship Search
Apply months before your target start date
Large pharmaceutical companies and contract research organizations open summer intern applications the preceding fall, sometimes in September. Smaller companies and co-op programs post on a rolling basis, so new openings appear year-round. Starting your search early gives you access to structured cohort programs that close before most candidates realize recruiting has begun.
Build a project portfolio before you apply
Clinical research intern recruiters expect limited work history, so give them something concrete to assess instead. Document two or three projects showing your data analysis, protocol review, or regulatory research skills, and make them accessible, whether as a written summary, a linked report, or a case study you can reference during an interview.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured internship programs tied to your university, and professors or career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside that campus activity widens the pool you can reach and lets you move faster when a role opens outside a formal university partnership.
Practice your interview format before the first screen
Clinical research intern interviews typically include behavioral questions about attention to detail and working with data, plus scenario questions about handling protocol deviations or informed consent issues. Practice out loud, explaining your reasoning step by step, since interviewers weigh how you think through a situation as much as the answer you land on.
Target structured clinical research intern programs early
Larger contract research organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and hospital systems run cohort-based internship programs designed to train candidates new to clinical research, including CRA training tracks and clinical operations rotations. These programs recruit months ahead of their start dates and fill fast, so identify the ones that match your degree program and apply in the first wave.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 50% of the clinical research internships listed here, so decide what you can realistically commit to before you start sorting through openings. Filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate first so every listing you review is one you can actually take, and you don't spend time on roles that don't fit your situation.
Clinical Research Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a clinical research internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited prior experience at the intern level. The concrete artifact that gives recruiters something to assess is a documented project portfolio showing your data handling, protocol comprehension, or regulatory research skills. Combine direct applications to companies running smaller cohorts with campus career fairs, where clinical research recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a clinical research internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for clinical research interns is consistent performance on real study work, available headcount on the team, and how early you signal interest in returning. Position for a return offer by delivering on your assigned protocols and asking your manager about full-time opportunities before your last week, without counting on it as a certainty.
When should I apply for clinical research internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large pharmaceutical companies, contract research organizations, and hospital systems recruit their summer intern cohorts the preceding fall, sometimes as early as September or October. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Treating the search as an ongoing effort rather than a one-season push gives you the widest range of options.
Are clinical research internships paid?
Most professional clinical research internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry segment, and location, so what you see will differ across a large pharma company, a smaller biotech, and a hospital research department. Listings show compensation where the employer discloses it, which lets you compare options before you apply.
What should a clinical research internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three documented projects showing the tools you used and where reviewers can see the work, such as a linked analysis, a published case study, or a written protocol summary. Add relevant coursework in areas like biostatistics, regulatory affairs, or clinical trial design. Keep the whole document to one page.
Are there remote clinical research internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 50% of the clinical research internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill quickly because they attract applicants from across the country, so apply as soon as you find a role that fits and use the work-type filter to see only remote or hybrid listings.
What is a clinical research associate (CRA) internship?
A CRA internship is a structured entry point into site monitoring and study oversight, typically offered by contract research organizations and large sponsors to train candidates new to the field. Programs are competitive and recruit early, often several months before the start date. If you're targeting a CRA career path, identify these programs specifically and apply in the first recruitment wave.
Can international students get clinical research internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
