Who's Hiring

Tips for Your Environmental Health And Safety Internship Search
Apply in the fall for summer EHS internships
Large employers in manufacturing, energy, and chemical production open summer EHS intern applications as early as September and close them before winter break. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so treat the search as year-round rather than a single spring sprint.
Build a project portfolio before you apply
EHS hiring teams expect limited work history from intern candidates. What they can evaluate is documented project work, a completed safety audit, a hazard-identification report, or an environmental compliance exercise. Include the scope, the methods you used, and a copy of the deliverable so recruiters have something concrete to review.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured EHS programs tied directly to your university, and professors with industry connections often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Apply directly to companies running smaller cohorts at the same time, combining both channels reaches programs that never come through campus recruiting at all.
Practice your technical screen out loud before interviewing
EHS intern interviews typically include a scenario-based screen, describe how you would conduct a job hazard analysis, respond to a spill, or identify a regulatory gap. Practice answering out loud, explaining your reasoning step by step, because interviewers weigh how you think through a problem as much as the final answer you reach.
Target structured EHS internship programs at larger employers
Many large manufacturers, utilities, and government contractors run cohort-based EHS intern programs designed to train people new to the field, rotating interns through industrial hygiene, compliance, and field safety assignments. These programs recruit early and fill fast, so identify the ones that fit your location and interests and submit applications in the first wave.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 0% of the environmental health and safety internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before you start applying, then filter by location and work type so you're only reviewing roles you can actually take. Sorting that out upfront keeps your application effort focused.
Environmental Health And Safety Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an environmental health and safety internship?
Lead with coursework and documented projects rather than work history, hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. A portfolio showing a completed safety audit, hazard assessment, or incident-investigation report gives recruiters something concrete to evaluate. Apply directly to company programs and attend campus career fairs, where EHS recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can an environmental health and safety internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for EHS interns is measurable performance on real work, completing audits on time, flagging genuine hazards, and earning trust from the safety team, alongside available headcount. Position yourself by treating every assignment as a sample of full-time work without counting on an offer as the outcome.
When should I apply for environmental health and safety internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers, manufacturers, utilities, and government contractors, recruit summer EHS interns the preceding fall, often closing applications before the end of October. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Treating the search as ongoing rather than seasonal keeps you from missing the early waves.
Are environmental health and safety internships paid?
Most professional environmental health and safety internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, a large chemical manufacturer typically pays more than a small municipal agency. Listings show compensation where the employer chooses to disclose it, so check each posting directly for what the role offers.
What should an environmental health and safety internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Two or three documented EHS projects, a campus safety audit, an environmental compliance exercise, or a hazard-identification walkthrough, with the methods used and a link or attachment showing the deliverable give recruiters something to assess. Add relevant coursework in industrial hygiene, toxicology, or regulatory compliance, and keep the entire document to one page.
Are there remote environmental health and safety internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 100% of the environmental health and safety internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote EHS cohorts tend to focus on compliance documentation, data analysis, and policy work rather than field inspections. Those roles fill fast, so apply early and filter by work type to see them before they close.
Can international students get environmental health and safety internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
